I work in a school program. While school is not in session during the summer months, I have plenty of time to get things done around our home. One of the biggest and most important thing I have been doing is cleaning. I have literally scrubbed wall from top of bottom (removing marks and whatnot), purged, painted… you name it. My “game plan” was to ensure that our home was in tip top shape before I got back to work in September.
We recently replaced the mattress on our bed. We sleep on a sofa bed (sadly), so it’s important to make sure we replace our mattress every few years to keep it from getting lumpy and too “flat.” The Better Sleep Council recommends replacing your mattress every 7-10 years, but with a sofa bed, it’s more like every 2-3 years.
Did you know you should also replace your pillows? If you have one of those inexpensive, polyester filled pillows you should be replacing them every six months (which is why they are cheap). Better quality pillows, such as memory foam pillows, should be replaced every 18-36 months, depending on your sleeping habits and how often you clean them.
I try and replace our pillows every so often. We used to buy the inexpensive ones, but they would go “flat” so quickly, that it felt like I had to replace them every other month (not literally, but it felt that way). Even my kids would complain about their pillows. I eventually got wise to all of it and started to purchase quality pillows – pillows that would not only last long, but also provide us with a great night’s sleep.
I was recently given the opportunity to try out some new pillows, available exclusively at Macys and Macys.com. I received to review two SensorGel Arctic Gusset Gel-Infused Memory Foam Pillow with Cool Coat Technology. I’m glad I received two pillows, otherwise my husband and I would fight over who got to sleep with it. Ha Ha.
What makes this pillow so special? Well, aside from the manufactures 10 year warranty (impressive!), the pillow has these great qualities and features.
- Hypoallergenic SensorGel memory foam is a proprietary formulation of super open cell, gel infused memory foam offering supportive pressure point relief & is tested to sleep cooler than traditional foams
- Foam is CertiPUR US certified to meet rigorous standards for performance, content, emissions & durability, & is analyzed by independent, accredited testing laboratories
- Dual fabric technology combines luxurious circular knit cover that wicks away moisture with high tech nylon for maximum cooling
- Removable zip off cover for easy cleaning
- Gusseted sidewalls cradle the head while aligning the spine to a more natural sleep position to provide support for all sleep styles
- Proprietary EcoShape molded memory foam construction provides improved quality & durability while eliminating waste produced by other manufacturing processes
In addition to the above mentioned features, this pillow also features something called an iCOOL Technology System. That means the pillow has an enhanced air flow, thanks to the pillow’s foam, fabric and fabrication process.
If you live where it gets really hot (which is most states), especially in the summer months, I’m sure you’ve experienced those nights where your pillow seems to make you feel hot and sweaty. Your neck and head might even sweat. It’s the worse feeling! If I’m not cool enough at night, I can’t sleep. I’ll just sit in the recliner and watch TV all night.
Most pillows don’t have adequate air flow. They trap in heat – whether it’s the pillow it’s self or the material it’s made from. When heat is trapped in the only place it can go it to your head – literally!
With the SensorGel Pillows, they are more “breathable,” allowing air to flow, keeping your head from becoming over heated compared to other brands and lesser quality pillows.
In addition to this, the pillows also have a cooling gel feature known as Cool Coat Technology. This process makes these pillows approximately three times cooler than other foam pillows.
This brief video explains more.
I was sold on the cooling features with this pillow, so I was happy to do a review.
PLEASE NOTE: I’m embarrassed by our sofa bed, and our SensorGel pillows have pillow cases on them, so I am using photos from the company instead of personal photos.
Please know that these pillows won’t keep you cool (I don’t want people to think they have an air conditioner quality to them). They will keep your head cooler than typical pillows.
I’m not always a fan of memory foam pillows. I find them to be too hard for my comfort. I really like these pillows. They are not hard at all. My head feels really comfortable when I am using it. It’s not too hard, and not too soft. It’s “just right.”
I move around a lot before getting comfortable enough to sleep. I’m a side sleeper, but sometimes I sleep on my right side, other things my left side. I tend to flip-flop a lot. I like how this pillow adjusts – and adjust quickly – to my head position.
Sometimes I have found that memory foam pillows squish down really flat when I read my head on them (then puff back up when I take my head off). That has not been the case with this pillow. It does flatten a bit when I put my head on it (as it’s suppose to do), but it goes to a decent level – one where I don’t feel the need to add another pillow in order to keep my head/neck at the right height.
The pillow does feel cooler to the touch than other pillows we have. Cooler – not cold. I don’t want people to think these pillows will make you feel cold. When you push down on it with your hands, you can feel how much cooler it is than other memory foam pillows.
Depending on the thickness of your pillow case, this cool feeling could be compromised. We just use regular, inexpensive pillow cases. I”m not sure if a thicker case (higher thread count) would change the cooling feeling or not.
As far as sleep goes, I still have a hard time sleeping. It has nothing to do with the pillow, it’s just me. I’ve always had a hard time sleeping. My husband sleeps like a baby.
My husband loves the pillow. He thinks its “great” (to quote him).
I notice that he doesn’t toss and turn as much as he typically does. When he doesn’t toss and turn, he doesn’t snore (he snores when he’s lying on his right side due to a deviated septum). I don’t know if that has anything to do with the pillow or not, but who am I to question it.

SensorGel also offers mattresses with the same cooling technologies, as well as other types of pillows.
What do you think about these pillows? Do they seem like something you would like to try for yourself?
