Can you believe that the holiday season is upon us. I’m so NOT ready. As much as I love decorating my home, the idea of lugging dozens of storage boxes up and down four flights of stairs is not fun. I also don’t enjoy going crazy trying to find gifts for my husband and son. Men are so hard to buy for. I can always come up with a million ideas for our daughter. When I ask my husband he says he doesn’t want or need anything. When I ask my son he just says he doesn’t know. My daughter is more than happy to hand over a wish list a mile long (ha ha).
There are plenty of ways to get into the Halloween spirit. Just step inside most stores and you’ll find fall and Halloween items. You can even find some Christmas things here and there too (talk about rushing things). You can even see Halloween themed and plenty of horror movies to watch on television.
Halloween is a lot of fun for child. Some children do find the idea of monsters, ghosts and witches terrifying. Thankfully they are not real (or at least I hope not!).
Here are some enjoyable Halloween themed books for your child to enjoy during “spooky season” that are not scary at all. Perhaps they will show your child that there truly is nothing to be afraid of during Halloween.
I’ve also included some Halloween/seasonal books for adults to create yummy (and creepy!) desserts and treats for your family and friends.
Aggie and the Ghost
Written by Matthew Forsythe
Aggie is all excited to be able to live on her own – or so she thinks. She soon learns that her new home is haunted by a mischievous ghost. Aggie is willing to let the ghost live with her as long as he follows her rules. When he doesn’t, she turns to an epic game of tic-tac-toe to decide if he gets to stay or he has to go.
This is a fun story with illustrations that really work well with this story.
I love that the ghost does mischievous things and nothing scary. I also think it’s great that the writer makes Aggie not afraid of the ghost. It shows young readers that there is nothing to be afraid of and that you can be brave.
This is a wonderful story that can be enjoyed year round, not just for Halloween. After all, ghost are around all year long, not just for the holiday. Ha Ha.
This Year a Witch
Written by Zoey Abbott
I think a lot of kids will relate to this story. A little girl has been just about every adorable Halloween costume you can think of (as do most young trick-or-treaters) such as a mouse, bunny and even a strawberry. This year she wants to take it up a few levels and be a scary witch for Halloween.
This story is about how she transforms herself into a scary witch – so scary that she even scares herself! Find out how her dad helps her deal with this costume gone wrong.
I liked the unique illustrations in this book. I can’t describe the style, but it’s really unique.
I think children will love this story.
Halloween isn’t just for children. Adult enjoy the holiday too. Plenty of adults have costume parties for their friends, family and co-workers.
If you are hosting a Halloween party this year, or you are invited to one and would like to bring a special treat with you to share with others, check out these very interesting recipe books.
The Little Gothic Bakeshop
Written by Helena Garcia
The Little Gothic Bakeshop showcases over 50 spooky and inventive recipes from The Great British Baking Show star, Helena Garcia, who impressed the judges and audiences alike with her creepy creations. Brewing with mystique, this cookbook is your go-to guide to easily transform ordinary recipes into macabre masterpieces, including devilishly delicious cakes, cookies, pastries, breads, desserts, and drinks.
Covering Bewitching Beverages, Spooky Cookies and Candies, Ghoulish Breads and Pastries, To-Die-For Desserts, and Macabre Cakes and Bakes.
I’ll be honest, I wasn’t familiar with the name Helena Garcia, but I do know The Great British Baking Show. I have seen a few episodes over the years (not sure what channel).
I love horror movies, and I enjoy decorating my home with spooky decorations for Halloween. I’ve been known to go all out. The creepier the better.
This recipe book is “right up my alley.”
I NEED to make this scary bear cake! I’m not the great at baking, but THIS is something I really want to make.
I have a plush bear that looks similar to this bear (except mine talks and says “peek-a-boo.”). I think NOT having eyes makes it even more terrifying.
Gruesome! I love it!
If you love creepy, scary, gothic, macabre Halloween things (or just in general), you must check out this recipe book.
Ghost Food
Written by Cayla Gallagher
This is NOT a book for children, but they sure can help with the recipes found within the page.
Ghost Food is a Halloween themed recipe book featuring a lot of very creative recipes that would be perfect for your family’s Halloween party, or simply to surprise your family.
This book features 76 spooky, fun and frightening Halloween inspired sweet treats.
I think the difference between this book and the other Halloween recipe book is that these recipes are more kid-friendly/family friendly. The other recipe book features recipes geared more towards adults, or at least that is how I see it.
Both books are filled with recipes that I would love to try out for myself. I just need to plan for a Halloween party (not sure if I’ll have time this year). I’m sure with either book you’ll find recipes you’ll want to try yourself.
In this recipe book you’ll find plenty of colorful (and dare I say cute) recipes. I included a few pictures (below).
I love the variety of recipes in this book. Most are pretty easy to make.
I found a few recipes I am considering making for my “work kids” for our Halloween party this year. Normally I bake mini-cakes that look like skulls. This year I’d love to try something different. This book gave me plenty of ideas to choose from.
Even though this book is for adults, I think children can help with these creations. I know they would enjoy eating them too.
You can look for these books where ever books are sold.
All of these books, except Ghost Food, are from Simon and Schuster Publishing. Ghost Food is published by Sky Horse Publishing. Be sure to check them out online and on social media to keep up-to-date on new book releases.
