Did you know last month was Get Organized month? Ever since that reminder hit me I have been on a quest to get better organized. Certain areas of our home are more challenging than others. It’s also a huge task since I have to work with nine other people in my household to get them on board too. That’s why I have been trying to establish these 5 ways to get organized:
- Set 15 minutes aside every day. When I learned this tip from Natalie, a professional organizer at Organized Habits, I felt relief because this is an attainable goal. If each member of our family, who is old enough to organize, works 15 minutes a day to organize something that’s a total of 2.5 hours of organizing! We should be seeing amazing results but we aren’t because not everyone is cooperating and doing their tasks.
- Start in the small areas. I like this idea too because, again, it makes reaching organizing goals go much faster…little by little…inch by inch…closer to being more organized and less cluttered.
- Just DO IT. (Nike’s slogan) Stop procrastinating and get at it. That’s where I am at right now. A pending visit from my mom is highly motivating, as is the 2013 tax day.
- Establish a routine and stick to it. This is where I am struggling, but want to “arrive”. If the 15 minutes are at the same time every day it will be easier to establish this new habit of spending that time organizing. Otherwise it is destined to be hit or miss.
- Recruit help, if need be. As the book 5 Days to a Clutter Free House recommends, get help. Whether that’s a professional organizer, your friends and family, having extra hands to do the work of sorting and decluttering will make get the job done a much faster rate than if you are doing it alone. Plus it’s motivating working with others and seeing results.
It may take some time to develop the new habit of getting organized but hopefully these 5 ways to get organized will help you move in the right direction.
