The film, A Mindcraft Movie, is now available for purchase or rental on Blu-ray, DVD, 4K UHD and of course, digital.
Thus far this is the highest grossing film of 2025 in the United States, grossing $398 million at the box office.
The film stars Jack Black, Jason Momoa, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge, to name a few.
The film is based upon an extremely popular video game that kids around the world enjoy playing, Mindcraft. I have personally never played the game before, nor have I seen it in action. I Googled what the game is all about, and this is what I found;
The primary point of Minecraft is to provide a sandbox environment where players can build, explore and survive with no set objectives or goals. Players can choose to focus on creative building, adventuring, or simply surviving within the game’s world.
All I really knew about the game is that players building things with cubes/blocks.
You don’t really have to know anything about the game to watch this film. It’s easy enough to understand without any prior knowledge. Even though it’s sort of based on the game, this film is a “stand alone” from that.
Almost all the kids I work with have seen this film (ages 5-10). Most were fans of the game to begin with. It’s no wonder this film is such a hit with kids and parents alike.
I was going to write my own synopsis, but I feel like the official one is much better (more condensed) that I could have done.
Welcome to the world of Minecraft, where creativity doesn’t just help you craft, it’s essential to one’s survival! Four misfits—Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Hansen), Natalie (Myers) and Dawn (Brooks)—find themselves struggling with ordinary problems when they are suddenly pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld: a bizarre, cubic wonderland that thrives on imagination. To get back home, they’ll have to master this world (and protect it from evil things like Piglins and Zombies, too) while embarking on a magical quest with an unexpected, expert crafter, Steve (Black). Together, their adventure will challenge all five to be bold and to reconnect with the qualities that make each of them uniquely creative…the very skills they need to thrive back in the real world.
Jack Black is a “master” when it comes to his trade (acting). He puts his heart and soul into the characters he plays in films. He comes across as the real thing. He might be goofy, but he excels in those types of characters. I was not surprised at all that he was in this film. He’s a great choice for kid’s films (Goosebumps, Jumanj, Dear Santa, The House with a Clock in the Walls…).
It’s Jason Momoa that seemed like a really odd choice for this film. Don’t get me wrong, I like Jason Momoa. He’s a great actor for action films. However in this film he looks so odd. It’s like trying to slap some lipstick and a wig on a pig… it just doesn’t look right. The tight jeans, monster t-shirt, and pink jacket doesn’t look good on him. And the hair… don’t get me started on his hair in this film. I DOES look like a wig. I’m sure it’s just the way his real hair was styled, but he just doesn’t look right.
I’m not sure if he was a good choice for this role. It doesn’t suit him. The other actors really pulled their roles off well, but I felt uncomfortable (for lack of a better word) when I saw Mamoa. It’s almost cringeworthy (no offense to him).
Aside from that, there is a lot of silliness in this film that kids go crazy for. There’s action, strange beings, and familiarity with the Mindcraft game to make this film a huge hit with the kiddos. I can see it’s appeal.
There are great special effects in this film. I especially like the Piglins. You have to see them for yourself to understand what I mean. Malgosha, the queen of the Piglins is especially creepy looking.
This film even has that funny looking green thing you see from the game called Creeper.
Overall I think this was a fun film. It kept me entertained throughout. It’s one of those films that you don’t have to “think” when watching it… just enjoy it.
