If you’re not content with your present career, this can affect your outlook on life. Perhaps you didn’t have the opportunity to attend college after high school. Or maybe you finished college, but are no longer happy in your field. Regardless of your reasons for discontent, you can make moves to advance your career and work in a field that you enjoy. Of course, this is easier said than done if you have children. But being a working parent shouldn’t stop you from achieving your career goals.
Here are three ways to find satisfaction in your career despite having children.
1. Apply for an internship. Maybe you’re ready to move in a new direction, but don’t have the skills needed. If you need experience, consider an internship. These are non-paid or entry-level positions that provide the opportunity to gain experience in a particular field. Some people apply for internships immediately after graduation, before acquiring a lot of financial responsibilities. But if you have children, taking a non-paying or low-paying internship may not be feasible. But don’t give up so easily. There is a way to work your job, plus learn a new profession. If possible, schedule your intern during the afternoon or evening hours after work, or on the weekends.
2. Go back to school. Getting a degree or completing an advanced degree can give you the skills needed to seek better opportunities. But how do you find time to complete a degree with kids? Enroll in evening classes one or two days a week, and explore online degree programs. Degree programs are ideal because you can learn at your own pace and attend college from your home computer. When planning for college, be sure to research different scholarships and financial aid programs to help you shoulder the expense.
3. Be your own boss. Maybe the problem isn’t your position or field, but your employer. If you work long hours for little pay, or if you feel under-appreciated by your company, starting your own business can solve this problem. As your own boss you’re responsible for the success of the business. But if you have the expertise and the determination, this can be the opportunity you need. You can increase your income, plus spend more time with your family.
Career breaks rarely fall in your lap. If you need a change, take control of your life and seize new opportunities. Having kids shouldn’t be a deal breaker with regards to advancing your career. Having kids should be your motivation to find happiness in your work.
