I have not watched the classic film, A Street Car Named Desire, in ages. In fact I can’t even remember the last time I’ve seen the movie all the way through. I’ve caught it on TV a few times over the years and watched bits and pieces of it, but I can’t remember the last time I sat and watched it from start to finish.
When I think about A Street Car Named Desire I think about Marlon Brandon yelling out “Stella”. 🙂
The movie was released in 1951 and stars Vivien Leigh (Blanche DuBois), Marlon Brando (Stanley Kowalski), Kim Hunter (Stella Kowalski) and Karl Malden (Harold “Mitch” Mitchell).
The movie is based on a play written by Tennessee Williams.
The film won three out of the four categories it was nominated for at the Academy Awards including Best Actress (Vivien Leigh), Best Supporting Actor (Karl Malden) and Best Supporting Actress (Kim Hunter). Marlon Brando was also nominated for an Oscar but didn’t win.
This is NOT a “family friendly” film.
In a nutshell A Streetcar Name Desire is about a woman name Blanche DuBois who is exiled from the town she lived in for having an affair with a 17 year old student. Having no place to go she goes to stay with her sister Stella and her husband Stanley.
Blanche is mentally unstable and dellusional and causes grief for her sister, especially when it comes to her husband Stanley. Blanche has a way of bringing out the worst in Stanley. Eventually it all comes to a head and everything “explodes”.
It’s a rather intense film.
Here are two clips from the film, including the one scene from the film that stands out in my mind (Stella!!!).
This classic film is now being released on Blu-ray along with 40-pages filled with dazzling photos, film history trivia and more. The set, with bonus features including five documentaries, and a commentary track, can be yours for just a modest burst of creativity.
I think it’s pretty cool how they created this Blu-ray “book”. It looks exactly like a book. The back cover holds the Blu-ray disc.
I’ll be posting my review in a couple of weeks. I haven’t had a chance to watch the movie or the bonus features yet.
The bonus features include;
– Commentary with Karl Malden, film historian Rudy Behlmer and Jeff Young
– Elia Kazan movie trailer gallery
– Movie and audio outtakes
– Marlon Brando screen test
– Elia Kazan: A Director’s Journey documentary
– Five insightful documentaries: A Streetcar on Broadway, A Streetcar in Hollywood, Desire and Censorship, North and the South and An Actor Named Brando.
In honor of the films 60th Anniversary I have TWO Blu-ray books to give to two lucky readers (each winner received one Blu-ray Book).
This giveaway is open to US residents only and will end on April 24, 2012 at 12:01 AM (EST). The winners will be chosen at random using a random number generator from all eligible entries. The winners will be notified via e-mail and will have three days to reply with a name and mailing address (no PO Box) or a new winner will be chosen.
