Did you know that September 19th is international Talk Like a Pirate Day? Yes, it’s a real thing.
The holiday was officially created back in 1995 in Albany, Oregon by Mark Summers and John Baur (according to information I found online). They created the holiday because they felt like everyone in the world should talk like a pirate. That’s certainly an odd idea, but for some people, they relish in the idea of being able to do “pirate speak” at home, at work, and with their friends.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t know this holiday existed, but I can see how people would find it fun to participate in. Knowing this now, I have a feeling that on the 19th I’ll be saying “Ahoy Matey” and “Arrg” (spelling) throughout the day.
If your child or grandchild is into pirates, there is no better way to celebrate the holiday with PLAYMOBIL’s Pirate Ship (#71418).
Set sail with the PLAYMOBIL Pirate Ship and dive into a world of swashbuckling adventures! This floatable ship features rotating cannons, movable sails, and detailed accessories, perfect for young pirates aged 4 and up. Join Pirate Queen Rohanna “Ro” Razor-Tide and Manta-Hunter Myles as they search for lost treasures. With room for multiple figures and a parrot companion, this PLAYMOBIL ship guarantees hours of imaginative play.
PLAYMOBIL was kind enough to send me their Pirate Ship for me to check out in person.
This is a good size pirate ship. It’s not too big, but it’s certainly not small either. It’s intended for children ages 4-10+ (due to small parts it’s not recommended for little ones).
Normally I put the PLAYMOBIL sets together, but this time around my husband put this together for me. He was actually excited to see what it looked like completed. He also tends to put things together a lot quicker than I do. He seemed to get this completed super quick. There didn’t seem to be too many pieces to put together.
This set comes with two pirates and a lot of accessories to keep your child entertained for a long time. Plus it’s a PLAYMOBIL set, so you can mix and match people and accessories from other PLAYMOBIL play sets. There are other pirate play sets from PLAYMOBIL also available.

No pirate set would be complete without a treasure chest filled with gold “coins.” In order to find the treasure, you will need a treasure map to find it, and a shovel to dig it up. PLAYMOBIL always puts so much thought and detail into all their play sets.

Just in case your pirate encounters another pirate, and needs to defend the ship and/or their treasure, there are swords they can use to fight off their foe.
Notice the peg leg on the one pirate. Again… so much detail is always put into each play set.

Look at all the detail on the pirates clothing. He’s even sporting a tattoo and scars on his face. After all, the life of a pirate is not easy. This pirate looks like he’s seen more than one battle on the high seas.

I think this pirate can pass as both a female or male. Just because it has long hair doesn’t mean it’s a girl. I’m sure there are not too many hair dressers available on the high seas.
I like that the jewelry is printed on the figure, that way you don’t have to worry about little pieces getting misplaced.
By the way, the steering wheel works.

No pirate ship would be complete without a parrot. I don’t know why. When I think about parrots I think about beautiful, colorful, exotic birds. I don’t see how they fit on a grungy, beat up pirate ship, but some how they’ve become synonymous with pirates.

Look at all the detail on the sails, right down to what looks like “tears” to give them a more weathered look.
They look like they are made out of a fabric-like material, but really they are plastic. I think that is a better option since real fabric can tear and fray over time. Plus this ship can go into water, and the last thing you want is your child playing with a toy that has wet fabric.
I didn’t test this ship out on water. In hindsight I should have, but the ship is currently at the place where I work, and my “work kids” won’t be using it in the water. That is why I forgot to test it out. If it was for my own kids, I would have tested it out on the bathtub when they took a bath.

This red “flame” looking piece really shoots out from the cannon. It really adds another level of realism to this play set.
Our cats appreciated this feature. They were more than happy to go after it after we shot it out of the cannon. Ha Ha.

Above is a close up look at the “crow’s nest” area (top of the sails). It’s another great close up view of the weathered look of the sails. You can also see a close up of the “roaps” that help to keep the sails together.
This is such a fun play set, even the girls at work love playing with this. In fact, they have been playing with it more than the boys have (no kidding). I thought for sure the boys would fight over who got to play with this set, but it’s the girls who are “fighting” over it. They don’t really fight, per say. I just make them take turns. Since there are two pirates, two children can play at the same time. They also use this along with other PLAYMOBIL pieces that we have.
If your child/grandchild loves pirates, or you want a fun thing you can do (play with) as a family, check out PLAYMOBIL’s Pirate Ship (#71418). It retails for $49.99.
You can purchase this set on the PLAYMOBIL website (PLAYMOBIL.com), as well as other retail locations. Be sure to visit the brand’s website to check out more pirate themed play sets.
PLAYMOBIL can also be found on social media. You can find their links on the bottom of their website.
