Can you believe that Christmas is just about a month away? Crazy! We decorated this weekend (the tree doesn’t go up until after Thanksgiving), but I have yet to buy any presents for anyone. Sigh…
I work with children, and I have been thinking about crafts and projects to do next month (December). I already have a pile of Christmas coloring pages printed out.
I was planning on making colorful paper chains to help children visualize and count how many days until Christmas. It’s something that I made as a child every year, and I STILL have them up in my home around the entry ways (just the paper chains, we don’t use them to countdown to Christmas.
Something we always did with my children was to give them an advent calendar to help countdown to Christmas. I always bought them the ones filled with chocolate, so that each day you get a piece of candy to enjoy. My son used the advent the correct way, my daughter ate all the candy within the first week. Ha Ha.
I have a unique advent that was sent to me from Workman Publishing. It’s called The Story of Christmas Story Book Set and Advent Calendar.
According to the publisher;
Wonderfully illustrated and brimming with holiday spirit, this unique advent calendar features 24 jewel-like miniature board books to help children count down to Christmas. Each day from December 1st through Christmas Eve, open a book, just like the peek-a-boo window on an Advent calendar, and then hang it on the Christmas tree by its gold thread loop. Read in sequence, the books tell the magical story of the first Christmas, from Gabriel’s visit to Mary to the Three Wise Men gazing at the star to Jesus’ birth. A treasured keepsake to reuse year after year.
This is a truly unique advent calendar. I love how it’s set up when you open it up. As you can see, there are many mini-books for you and your family to remove from the advent “book” and enjoy. They are ACTUAL storybooks! Each one has a few pages that you and your family can read and enjoy together.
The photo above still has the plastic protective wrap on it. I should have removed it before taking this photo. Sorry about that.
The books are numbered, because you are suppose to read them in order up until Christmas Eve. The last book is larger than the others, and is about the birth of baby Jesus.
Each book is filled with beautiful, colorful images that go along with the story.
I’m sorry that my photos don’t do this stunning advent set justice. It’s so much nicer in person.
The illustrations can be enjoyed boy children and adults alike, as you can see from the above photos. They are neighter “childish” or too grown up. They are just perfect.
Each mini book is also an ornament that you can hang in your tree too!
This advent calendar is not only a great way to count down to the big day, but it’s also a wonderful way for families to come together by reading the story and hanging the ornament on the Christmas tree. It’s also a great way to teach children about the true reason for Christmas (and not just about getting toys from Santa).
