Did you know that May is National Bike Month? I just found that out myself.
I miss riding a bike. When I was a child, and even well into my teens, I used to love to ride my bike. I would ride it everywhere. My friends and I would ride our bikes into town on a daily basis during summer vacation and on the weekends.
I haven’t rode a bike in about 30 years. My husband and I talk about getting bikes often. Our kids have bikes (although my daughter is in need of a new one). We often talk about ride bikes around a park called Rockland Lake. The trip around the lake is 3 miles. We usually walk it. We think it would be fun to ride bikes around the lake instead. There used to be a bike rental available there but it closed down due to the economy.
I wanted to buy my husband a bike this past Christmas but I think it’s something he’d need to pick out. There are so many different shapes and styles of bikes that it would be hard to pick the perfect one for him. I rather he do it himself.
Riding a bike is not only Earth friendly (compared to other modes of transportation) but it’s also a fabulous way to exercise. Not only that, it’s a fun thing to do as a family.
On May 9, 2012 there will be the first ever National Bike to School Day. That is an awesome idea! If it was possible I’d have my kids bike to school. My son gets bussed across town and my daughter’s bike is too small for her. If it was feasible I’d certainly encourage my children to do that.
If you would like more information about the event you can find more it here, www.WalkBiketoSchool.org. There you can learn the basics as well as check out the learning and resource tools.

While I can’t call it a favorite memory the one that has stayed with me the longest is the wreck I had that turned me against bike riding for many years. I was young and carefree. I loved the fell of wind blowing over my sunburned skin and through my hair. I rode without fear … then my bike got away from me and about 75% of that sunburned skin got left on the roadway. It took about 10 years before I would even get back on a bike and to this day I’m still a bit leery of trying.

when i was abt 7/8 i was riding my bike along the road with some of my friends. a car pulled out and knocked me over and left. i was scrapped and bleeding, all along one side of my body. one of the kids that lived nearby, ran to get his mother. his mother was the spanish teacher at the elementary school (i found this out when school started in the fall, although i did not take spanish). she called my mother who came and got me and the bike. i think i went to the hospital b/c my big toe was a mess. i was not a big bike rider except when i was young. i was always at the barn with the horses (at meredith college-all female school). another time, i was riding a friend’s bike when i was in my late 20’s. the bike did not have front brakes. we were riding on the bike trail in dc. i hit a hole, and the biked flipped over on me, i had a slight concussion, passed out for a little while, ended up going to the hospital. i like to ride bikes for exercise, but where there are no cars, no holes in the road. i am very accident prone, i have had several concussions, broken bones, dog bites on my face, hit in the eye with a baseball bat, shot with a bb gun by my older brother, many car accidents (only abt 2 my fault-which were minor), many horse accidents, etc. my mother used to tell me not to leave the house unless i was fully insured.
