I have always loved books. I used to be an avid reader. I actually have most of my books from when I was a child. I kept them to read to my kids. I plan on reading them to my grandchildren one day too (God willing).
I also love old books. I have a few that I stumbled across at antique stores. I have some old books written by Rudyard Kipling, Charles Dickens and Hugh Lofting, to name a few.
I love the look of old books. There is just something about them that appeals to me.
Whenever I am at an antique stores, thrift shop or even a used book store, I am always on the look out for a great, classic book with an old time cover.
I guess the appeal of classic, old time books appeal to a lot of book lovers because Macmillan Publishing has curated a new line of books for those who enjoy the look and feel of older classic books.
The Macmillan Collector’s Library is designed and curated to appeal to book lovers everywhere. They are beautiful editions of some of the world’s most recognizable classics, as well as some lesser-known works from the literary canon. Stunningly produced with gilt edges, ribbon bookmark, elegantly illustrated jacket, and embossed cloth binding, these timeless books are sure to take a place of honor on any bookshelf.
I love the idea of producing books with the old time look to them, especially with the gilted edges. How elegant.
I also think adding the ribbon to serve as a bookmark is a genius idea. I wish all books came with a built in bookmarker. It’s better than using a scrap of paper, and you don’t have to worry about it falling out like you would with a traditional bookmarker.
Some of the books even have the classic pictures inside their pages. I especially love the images in the Alice in Wonderland book.
All of the books have dust jackets that you can remove if you want. I often remove them because I find that they get ripped in the bookcase. These dust jackets I intend to keep on the books because I love the way they look.
Underneath the dust jack the outside of the book has a beautiful, etched design on the covers.
Macmillian sent me a few copies of their Collector’s Library books to check out for myself. I received the following titles.
- Doctor Thorne (I never heard of this title before)
- Pride and Prejudice
- Alice in Wonderland (my favorite of the three books)
I’m currently reading another book to review. I haven’t had a chance to read these yet. When I do I’m going to read Doctor Thorne first, only because I have never heard of the book before and I am curious about it.
These books are smaller than traditional books. They are the perfect size to fit into your purse tote bag, backpack or gym back. I think their compact makes them the ideal on-the-go books to read.
I know that some people prefer to read e-books. Not me. I would much rather read books the “old school” way by actually having a book in my hand and the feel of turning the pages.
Check out how lovely these books are.
The Macmillan Collector’s Library carries a lot of classic titles. Here are just a few example.
- Sense and Sensibility
- Dracula
- Farewell to Arms
- Peter Pan
- The Little Prince
The Macmillan Collector’s Library books are available at many retail locations across the country. I have seen them on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. They sell for around $10-$12 each. That is not so bad considering how lovely these books are.
