I think every child – at one point or another – believes that there is something lurking under their bed, in their closet or just outside their bedroom window. I know I did. That is why I slept with a night light probably longer than I should have (I think I was around 9 when I stopped using one). I wonder why kids think that way?
Even as a teen and young adult I would wonder what was hiding outside my window. I used to be afraid to open the curtains at night. I blame Amityville Horror for that (the pig eyes!).
Imagine if there was a world of unknown creatures that no one has ever seen before, like fairies, gnomes or even trolls. It actually sounds kind of cool.
What if I told you that there is an entire world just below your feet? OK… technically there isn’t in real life, but there is in Focus Features newest movie – The Boxtrolls.
The Boxtrolls are quirky, mischievous creatures that live in underground caves beneath the streets of Cheesebridge. In the film, these fun loving trolls raise an orphan boy named Eggs. Eggs sees himself as a troll too, not a human boy.
In the film, Cheesebridge’s villain, Archibald Snatcher wants to rid the town of the trolls. Egg needs to save his troll family. When he ventures “into the light” (out of the caves) he meets a young girl name Winnie who quickly becomes his friend. With her help, Eggs devises a daring plan to stop Snatcher and save his troll family.

The Boxtrolls comes from the same people who created Coraline and ParaNorman. That means all the characters are puppets that have to be moved by hand, frame by frame, and shot. Even the movements of the eyes and mouth have to be moved frame by frame. It’s really tedious work, but in the end its so well worth it.
If you want to see how they do it check out this brief video that Focus Features made for the making of ParaNorman which was also done in stop animation. It will give you a better understanding about what is involved in making these kinds of films. It’s really fascinating – Hand-making the World of ParaNorman.
The Boxtrolls stars the voice talents of Ben Kingsley, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Elle Fanning, Jared Harris, Toni Collette, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade and Tracy Morgan.
The film will be released in theaters on September 26, 2015.
I can’t wait to see the film. I find stop animation films fascinating. Not only that boxtroll characters in the film look adorable. I wouldn’t be surprised to see boxtroll toys on store shelves soon after the movie’s release. Maybe in a toy that you can put different pieces together to make your own boxtroll (similar to a Mr. Potato Head). That would be a cute idea.
If you would like to learn more about the film you can check out the film’s official website, www.TheBoxtrolls.com. You can also check out the film on the various social networking sites – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram – as TheBoxtrolls. The official hashtag is #TheBoxtroll.
