I try and make it a point to provide my children with healthy snack options. Sometimes I feel like they are getting bored with the same old things all the time. So I wanted to hear from my readers with some delicious, fun and healthy snacks to serve my children. I would love to hear from you!
Here are some snacks I serve to my kids. Perhaps your family might enjoy some of these too.
– Frozen Grapes (NOT recommended for small kids). I buy grapes when they are on sale. I wash them, dry them and then put them in a zip lock bag. My kids love to grab a handful to snack on. They are not hard at all. I can’t explain the texture on the inside but it sort of reminds me of a frozen fruit bar.
– Apple & Peanut Butter “Burrito”. My mom used to make this for me. You take a Burrito, spread some peanut butter on it and then add some sliced apples (I think Granny Smiths work the best, but that is my preference). Then roll it up and eat. It’s a lot tastier then it sounds.
– Smoothies. We don’t have any real recipe for smoothies. We just take whatever ingredients we have and toss them in the blender to see what we can come up with. Fruits, yogurt, juice, and yes, even veggies! Sometimes we create things so yummy but forget what we put in it so we can’t recreate it. LOL!
– “Orange Julius”. If you are around my age (41) you might remember that orange creamsicle type drink they used to sell called an Orange Julius. We have our own version. You take one part milk to two parts orange juice. Put it in a blender with some ice and add a packet of sugar or sugar substitute. It tastes like an orange creamsicle smoothy! You can adapt it to suit your tastes (more milk, less OJ, no sugar…). It’s all up to you. My kids LOVE it!
– Toast some whole wheat bread and spread some Nutella on it. YUMMY! Or you can take those frozen pretzels you buy in the store, omit the salt and instead spread some Nutella on the pretzel. Make sure it’s not too hot or the Nutella will melt all over the place.
– Keep your fridge stocked with cleaned and cut up fruits and veggies. When we go food shopping we pick up lots of fresh fruits and veggies. I make sure to wash them and cut them up (if necessary) and put them in containers in the fridge. If my kids open up the door to the fridge and see Watermelon chunks or baby carrots staring back at them they are more likely to grab them instead of looking for something else.
– Cheese sticks. My kids LOVE cheese sticks. I make sure to have some handy whenever possible.
– Granola mixes. I like to buy granola mixes in bulk whenever possible. I then put scoops in small containers and put them in the pantry so that the kids can get one whenever they want (grab and go so to speak).
– I make sure to have Jello, yogurt and reduced fat pudding handy too.
How about you? What do you give your kids to snack on? What do you like to snack on? I’d love to hear from my readers.
