Now available on DVD is the series iZombie: The Complete First Season.
I love zombie movies. I always have, ever since the original Dawn of the Dead (1978) movie.
Zombies are so popular these days, thanks to the awesome series The Walking Dead (I am a HUGE fan of The Walking Dead).
Because of the popularity of The Walking Dead there are plenty of zombie related things popping up – including television series. One such series is iZombie.
I have seen trailers for iZombie, and wanted to check it out, but it comes on the same time as another show we always watch. So I have never had a chance to see it. I have been waiting for the series to come available on DVD so that I could finally check it out. Thankfully the time is now. As of today, September 29, 2015, iZombie: The Complete First Season is available for purchase where ever DVDs are sold.
iZombie is NOT your typical zombie show. It’s not about hoards of undead people attacking the living and ripping them apart to eat their body parts. iZombie is a creative twist on the zombie genre. The show DOES NOT focus on blood and gore. There is the occasional image of brains, but that is about it. If you think about it cauliflower looks a lot like a brain, so really, that is not too gross.
iZombie is about a medical student, Olivia “Liv” Moore. She was on the fast-track to becoming a doctor due to her quick thinking skills. Her main focus was her career and her handsome fiance, Major Lilywhite.
One night a co-worker invites her to a party on a boat. Liv wasn’t interested but her finace, Major, encouraged her to go. That was a huge mistake. On the boat people were taking a strange drug which turned them into zombies. Liv was able to escape, but not without being scratched. The scratch turned her into a zombie too – or you could say it made her “un-dead.”
Unlike typical zombies, Liv is able to carry out her day WITHOUT killing people and eating them. She did have to make some major life changes including breaking up with her fiance and quitting her medical career and taking on a job at the city morgue.
Her friends and family notice the huge change in Liv, but they have no idea that she is a zombie.
Working at the morgue allows Liv to eat. She needs to eat brains in order to not feel hungry. She can eat other foods, but brains is what keeps her going. She doesn’t eat a lot of brains, just a little bit here and there from the cadavers at the morgue.
Her boss, Ravi Chakrabarti, is the medical examiner that she assists. He some how figured out her secret. Instead of being afraid of her, he takes blood and does tests on her in order to figure out a cure.
One day Liv eats some of the brains from a “Jane Doe.” It wasn’t until a Police Detective, Clive Babineaux, shows up asking questions that Liv realizes she can see memories and dreams from the people’s whose brains she ate. As Detective Babineaux is talking about the victim, Liv is able to see a memory from the victim.
Ravi insists that Liv help the detective. Using the excuse that she’s a physic, Liv is able to share with the detective all the images she sees. Her visions help the detective to solve Jane Doe’s murder and capture the criminal who did it.
From here iZombie begins. Each episode sees to flow right into another. With each episode Liv eats a part of a victim’s brain to see into the victim’s past in order to help solve their murder, or why they died. Her visions help Detective Babineaux, a new guy on the force, to solve murders.
IZombie is not a horror series. Sure, she’s a zombie and eats brains, but it’s not scary, graphic or gross. People normally squeamish about zombie films/series can easily watch this series. It focuses more on Liv eating brains to help solve crimes more so than her noshing on someone’s intestines or hearts (none of which she does).
This show is smart, funny, entertaining and “addicting.” After watching the first episode I was hooked. I did a marathon viewing of the series, watching as many episodes as I could. Now I’m anxiously waiting for season two to begin. Season two begins on Tuesday, October 6, 2015 at 9:00 PM EST / 8:00 PM CST on the CW Network. Please check with your local television guide for the channel.
Have you seen iZombie? Are you a fan of the show?
