Available today, September 29, 2015, is the popular CW Network series – Jane the Virgin: The Complete First Season.
I have seen commercials for the series, but up until now I have never seen it before. The airs when another show we watch is on. None the less, I have been looking forward to seeing this show.
I received to review the complete first season. I am so glad I did! This show is addicting! I couldn’t turn it off. I even kept it on while my husband wanted to watch a football game. LOL!
Jane the Virgin is a show about a young twenty-something year old girl name Jane Villanueva. Jane is very religious and vowed to remain a virgin until marriage. She might not have to wait too long because she’s been dating Michael for a couple of years.
Jane works as a waitress at a local hotel. One day she discovers that the hotel is run by a man name Rafael Solano. Jane and Rafael had a romantic moment and shared a kiss five years earlier. Even though she’s in love with Michael she’s never forgotten about Rafael.
Rafael is married to Natalia. Their marriage is on the rocks. Rafael has fallen out of love with her, and unbeknownst to him, Natalia is having an affair with his best friend. Natalia has no plans of divorcing Rafael because she stands to gain a lot of money if they remain married for five years (as per their pre-nup).
Jane lives at home with her mother and grandmother. Jane’s mother, Xiomara, was a teenager mother – having Jane when she was 16 years old. Xiomara has never told anyone who Jane’s father was, not even her mother.
Jane and her grandmother love watching a Telenova (Latin soap opera) called The Passions of Rogelio. They both swoon over the lead actor, a very handsome and debonair actor name Rogelio de la Vega.
So far nothing seems too crazy about this show – but prepare yourself for a roller coaster ride.
Jane goes to see her OB/GYN for a routine exam. Her doctor is unavailable so another doctor fills in for him – Dr. Luisa Alver. Unfortunately for Jane, Dr. Alver is very upset the day she comes to work because she found out that her wife had been cheating on her.
Dr. Alver had two appointments – a routine exam (Jane) and an insemination. As you can guess, she mixed up the appointments. She accidentally inseminated Jane with sperm that had been previously frozen. The only reason she found this out is because the person who was supposed to be inseminated turned out to be her sister-in-law, Natalia.
Now Jane is impregnated with the semen from the man she used to have a crush on, and how is now currently her boss.
As if that wasn’t confusing enough, Jane’s fiance doesn’t want her to keep the baby. Jane’s grandmother wants her to keep it. Rafeal wants her to keep it and the only reason why Natalia wants her to keep it is so that she can get the millions of dollars due to her due to the pre-nup.
To add to the craziness, Jane’s biological father comes back into the picture. He turns out to be their favorite Telenova actor, Rogelio de la Vega.
Jane the Virgin is just like a soap opera – but in a much better way. It’s smart, witty, entertaining and the cast are very likable. It’s hard not to fall in love with the main character, Jane (played by the adorable Gina Rodriguez).
I watched the first episode, figuring I would watch a different episode every day. I couldn’t do that. The moment the first episode was over I had to watch the second, and the third, and the fourth… If it wasn’t for having to make dinner I would have kept on watching the series. I had to wait until the next day to watch more episodes.
This is NOT a “family friendly” series. Although most of the show is OK for younger viewers, there are parts that are not “kid friendly” including women making out, couples engaging in sex (no nudity, but a lot of hands on stuff and heavy breathing), a child abduction (kidnapping), murder and a few other things. Plus the idea of affairs, insemination and virginity is not suitable for younger viewers either.
Jane the Virgin: The Complete First Season has bonus features too. I have not had a chance to watch them as of yet, but I am planning on doing so. I have just a few more episodes to watch from the DVD collection before I check out the bonus features.
I really enjoy this show and I am anxious to see the second season. It airs Monday, October 19, 2015 at 9:00 PM EST on the CW Network. Please check with our local television guide for the channel.
Have you seen Jane the Virgin? What do you think about the series?

I haven’t seen this show yet but keep seeing commercials for it. Wasn’t sure what it was about until reading your synopsis. Definitely sounds interesting. Will have to watch it soon.
