The commercial called “Morty, are you listening?” cracks me up every time I see it on TV. They are such the quintessential couple, especially because Morty has “selective hearing” (don’t all men? Ha Ha Ha).
They also remind me of my great-grandparents. I am grateful that not only the longevity that runs in my family but also long time marriages.
My parents would have celebrated their 60th anniversary if my mom hadn’t passed away two months before then. Sixty years… I cannot image that. In a day and age when some marriages are lucky to last sixty months, let alone sixty years.
My husband and I will be celebrating our 17th anniversary this coming October. I plan on celebrating our 50th anniversary some day, and God willing our 60th. We’ll both be 88 when we reach our 60th anniversary. Thankfully people in my family live to be in their mid-to-late 80’s and early 90’s.
I had a great-great-Uncle who lives to be 103! He was single from his late 80’s on (his wife had passed away) but he remained active (he was bowling at age 92 and even driving!). What ended up being his down fall was literally that – a fall. He fell and broke his hip (at age 103). They doctor’s didn’t want to operate at his age so he was bed ridden. I think that is what did him in. He was so used to taking care of himself and doing things on his own that he couldn’t handle having to rely on anyone for help.
As long as our health is good I know me and my husband will be married for as long as that darling couple Morty and Lee.
I think the key to a long marriage is having a great sense of humor. You can’t take life too seriously all the time. You need to learn how to not let “life” get the best of you and stress you out. You need to have fun and enjoy life – no matter how old you are.
My husband and I are big kids at heart. We love to go to Toys R Us and buy toys and games for ourselves. LOL! We even like to color together. Coloring is a great stress reliever. You should try it some time.
It helps marrying your best friend. My husband is truly my best friend, and vice versa. Having an open line of communication, accepting each others “flaws”, trust and never going to bed angry with one another also helps.
To be honest my husband and I are polar opposites in every way – he’s tall and skinny, I’m short and overweight. He’s a morning person, I’m a “night owl”, he’s incredibly organized, I enjoy my “organized chaos”, he loves to watch football, I love to watch documentaries. I could go on and on but we have little in common, but some how it works. He’s my “ying” to my “yang” (in reference to Ying and Yang).
I think the fact we are each other’s best friend and we are both big kids at heart have a lot to do with the longevity of our marriage.
Anyway… back to my new favorite couple – Morty and Lee. I can relate to Lee. I’m “vertically challenged” (aka – short). It’s not easy for me to reach high places in our home, especially on top of the cabinets, fridge, pantries, wardrobe and the ceiling fans. I won’t stand on a stood or a chair. I have an unnatural fear that the chair or stood will either shift and cause me to fall and hurt myself, or some how it will give under my weight (I am overweight) and break, causing me to fall and hurt myself.
I personally use Swiffer products all the time, especially the dusters. I love how they are available with an extender handle allowing people to reach high places they can’t normally reach without standing on a stood or chair. I even keep one at my desk so I can do a quick dusting in between posts. With five cats and a dog we seem to generate a lot of dust.
For more information about Swiffer products visit www.Swiffer.com. You can also find the brand on Facebook and Twitter. The hashtag is #SwifferEffect
Swiffer would like to send a lucky reader some Swiffer products to help make cleaning around your home a little easier, just like the products did for Morty and Lee.

Tips for a long & happy marriage: Realize, up front, that there WILL BE bumps in the road. Don’t let them throw you off the road. Realize that when raising your children, life will be hectic; the two of you will probably be last & get the leftovers, but it won’t always be that way. Once you get to 20 years…….you’ll love each other in ways you never imagined & right now, after 24 years, we are having the best years of our married life. We are more in love than we’ve ever been.

My husband actually does the dishes, and the laundry! At one point, the washer/dryer was the newest gadget in the house, and 2 years later our dishwasher broke and our new replacement dishwasher was the newest gadget in the house. My husband is addicted to gadgets, and learned everything he could about them. So, for me anyways, the way to get my husband to do household chores is to buy high-tech appliances!
