Are you a fan of LEGOS? I’m not a fan of stepping on them, but I do think you can create A-M-A-Z-I-N-G things with them. Case in point, my husband has built part of a LEGO town that we keep on our television stand (it’s currently packed away because we needed room for Halloween decorations). It looks so nice!
Growing up, I had a similar set of building bricks (I believe PLAYSKOOL made them). I would literally spend hours creating with them.
Building blocks, no matter the brand, always helps to develop creativity and imagination in children.
As much as I love LEGOS, there is a “new brick in town” that allows you to create things that you can’t normally do with traditional building blocks. The blocks (or should I say cubes) are called Pix Brix.
Pix Brix is a pixel art puzzle brick that allows the artist to create 2D pixel art and 3D builds with only 1 unique patented piece design.
I am a site director for an after school program. I need to come up with a variety of activities for children, including STEM projects. Pix Brix are a great STEM product. It opens up a world of possibilities.
Unlike traditional building blocks that are square or rectangle, and only allow you to connect on one side, Pix Brix have a unique shape that allows you to connect with other Pix Brix on all sides.
Pix Brix are available in kits, containers and in bulk. The great thing is that all of the pieces in every set will work with other Pix Brix. That means that the possibilities are endless on what you can create with them.
I received a box of Pix Brix to review. I receive their their huge containers of 3,000 pieces (I believe the medium colors, I no longer have the box).
I will admit that initially I was “iffy” about these. Not because I didn’t think they could be used in the ways shown on the site, but more so because I work with a large number of children and I had fears of the pieces getting all over the place, and having to clean them up. The first two times my “work kids” played with these, I ended up taking them away. They weren’t allowed to play with them for a bit because the did exactly what I thought they would – they got pieces EVERY WHERE.
The kids kept asking to play with them, so I caved and gave them back to them under the stipulation that they don’t get the pieces every where and that they clean them all up when they are done. So far, so good.
The container came with all the colors nicely separated, as see above. The light is reflecting off a few of the pieces, making them look like they are a different color. That is not the case.
The brix are not as nicely separated anymore, but at least it’s not as “messy” as I thought they would leave it.
The brix are small in size. I have Carpal Tunnel in both hands/wrists, so it’s not easy for me to use these. Thankfully my kids don’t need my help, and one of my staff absolutely LOVES playing with these with the kids (he just turned 24 too, so he’s not a kid). Adults can enjoy these as much as children.
I’m not sure of the age range for these, but I have kids as young as 5 who use these with no problem. I just wouldn’t recommend these for little kids who still put things in their mouths.
The box I received came with a nice, colorful booklet that gives you ideas on what you can create using Pix Brix.
The book gives you step-by-step instructions on how to many many 3D figures and objects.
You can see from the above images how the Pix Brix attach to each other.
There is also a tool that comes with some of the sets to make the process of taking them apart easier. We don’t use that tool at work, and my work kids have never had any complaints, so I don’t think that you necessarily need it. But there is one available if you do.
Someone was making a word. I THINK it’s suppose to say “Love” when it’s completed.
I’m not sure if this is suppose to be something or just a child who was simply snapping the Pix Brix together randomly.
I believe these are Mindcraft characters (the green one is, I’m not sure about the person).
One of my MOST FAVORITE things created with the Pix Brix thus far by my work kids is this very large Mario figure.
How cool is that?
There are other really cool sets and containers available on the Pix Brix website. Here are just a few examples.
There is even a holiday diorama you can purchase on the Pix Brix website that would be perfect for the holiday season (it’s pictured below).
