Available today on DVD is the horror/thriller film June.
June was directed by L. Gustavo Cooper (The Devil Incarnate) and stars Kennedy Brice (“The Walking Dead”), Casper Van Dien (Shiver), Victoria Pratt (Patient Killer), Eddie Jemison (Ocean’s Eleven) and Lance E. Nichols (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button).
June tells the story of nine-year-old June (Brice) who has been shuffled in and out of foster homes for years. And though she tries to be good, no matter where she goes, a trail of chaos and terror seems to follow. It’s only when June is sent to live with a new couple, Lily (Pratt) and Dave (Van Dien), that it looks as if things might finally work out. Except this innocent child with the face of an angel is possessed by an ancient, malevolent entity that has hijacked her soul. Unless June can defeat the demon within, her new family – and mankind itself – are destined for destruction.
I saw the trailer for this film (below) and had high hopes for it. The trailer makes the film look a lot scarier than it truly is.
The trailer does make the film look really good – but the good parts are few and far between. Things like eyes turning jet black and June speaking in another voice (possession) are cool… but over all the film failed to deliver.
June is very slow. Very, very, very slow. My husband and I kept watching the time left on the DVD in hopes that something exciting would happen. Nothing really did.
The film is a bit confusing. We understood that June was possessed by another spirit, but the spirit was known as “Air” or “Are” (airy-ree) as June referred to it as. We assumed it was a spirit that protected nature and Earth from humans and their destruction, but as the film went on we figured we were way off on that.
The part of the film where June comes to live with Lily and Dave seems like it spanned several weeks (a lot happens) but in the film its only a week. It seems like too much for one week’s time. That just didn’t make sense.
Parts of the film were very predictable.
There are some bonus features. One is supposed to be an old “documentary” about Air/Are, however it seems more like a joke. There is no way it was a legitimate documentary. Even the acting in the documentary was a laughable.
That was the only bonus feature I watched. Normally I watch all the bonus features but I simply was not into it.
Sadly I was not impressed by this film at all. Even those who are easily scared probably won’t even close their eyes during this film.
Please keep in mind that I am just one person. It’s merely my opinion. Others might think this is an awesome film. Like my mom always used to say “one man’s meat is another man’s poison,” meaning just because someone loves something doesn’t meant that others will.
Look for June, released by RLJ Entertainment, where movies are sold.
