Often when people get excited about a new movie release it’s either because they read about the movie or saw the previews. For me, I tend to get excited about movies after seeing the previews. Whenever my husband and I get to go see a move in the theater we make a mental note of any preview we see for a movie that looks like something we’d want to see, either when it comes out in theaters or when it’s available on Blu-ray and DVD.
Movie 43 was one such movie. We saw previews for it and loved how it had an all-star cast. We couldn’t wait to see it.
I received a free screener copy to review. We couldn’t wait to see it. The film is rated R so we had to make sure our kids didn’t come in the room. Sometimes movies rated R are mostly due to bad language (they hear worse at school) and violence. Movie 43 had graphic nudity and crude humor. This is NOT a “kid friendly” movie. My 16 year old is not even allowed to watch it. I wouldn’t even let them watch this if they were 18.
Movie 43 really doesn’t have a plot, per say. It’s mostly about a man (Dennis Quaid) who is trying to get a movie producer (Greg Kinnear) to pick up one of his movie ideas. He has REALLY BAD movie ideas. Movie 43 is mostly just a series of featurettes and fake commercials. Each featurette was written, directed and/or produced by different people.
From what I have read about the film it took 10 years to get into production because movie studios didn’t want to touch it. It’s since been named one of the worse movies ever made.
Even know that I was curious about the movie and had to see for myself what people were talking about.
My husband loves comedies. I have seen him cry tears of laughter at some films, especially the classics (Caddyshack, Airplane, National Lampoon’s Vacation…). My husband did not laugh once during this entire film. Nor did I. A few times I actually closed my eyes or looked away because I was appalled by what I saw.
I had high hopes for this film. Many A-List stars are in this film;
- Hugh Jackman
- Kate Winslet
- Halle Barry
- Elizabeth Banks
- Dennis Quaid
- Greg Kinnear
- Anna Faris
- Emma Stone
- Johnny Knoxville
- Kristen Bell
- Gerard Butler
- Christopher Mintz-Plasse
- Seann Williams Scott
- Richard Gere
- Seth McFarland
- Naomi Watts
- Live Schreibe
- Chris Pratt
- Kieran Culkin
- Justin Long
- Jason Sudeikis
- Uma Thurman
- Kate Bosworth
- Terrance Howard
- Josh Duhamel
These are wonderful, talented actors – many of which are associated with block buster films. This is why I was anxious to see the movie. It features so many of my favorite actors.
I was shocked to see wonderful actors like Academy Award Winner Kate Winslet and hottie Hugh Jackman in a skit that revolved around Hugh having testicles hanging off his neck and no one seems to notice except Kate.
I’m not sure who would find this film funny. I’m leaning more towards teenagers (who are technically too young to see this film) and college age students. Most people will find this film rude, crude, disgusting and totally UN-funny. Most will agree that this film might have possibly earned the title of the worse movie ever made. I’m beginning to think the 83′ film Pirates of Penzance, 86′ Howard the Duck and 11′ Jack and Jill are Oscar worthy films by comparison.
I’m sure many people are going to be intrigued by the movie, and want to see what all the fuss is about. That is fine and totally understandable. I would recommend if you want to check out the film for yourself that you rent it before making a purchase.
Please note that this review is based on my opinion (although I have yet to find someone who liked the movie). Other people might think this is the funniest movie ever made. Like my mom always said “One man’s meat is another man’s poison”, meaning some people might like something and others might hate it. To each their own.
Movie 43 is available on Blu-ray and DVD where ever movies are sold.
Did you see Movie 43? If so, what did you think about it? Feel free to leave a comment.

All of these A list actors and I’ve never even heard of this film till I read your review. It’s a shame the movie ended up being so lame. My hubby and I both like a good comedy but I think we’ll have to pass on this one.
