Now playing on Amazon, and available on Tubi and Google TV on September 16, 2022, is the horror film, Surrogate.
The film was directed by David Willing. and written by Beth King, David Willing.
Surrogate stars Kestie Morassi. Louise Siverson, Jane Badler, Taysha Furragia, Ellie Stewart, Darcy Kent and Ellie Tevelis co-star.
Natalie (Morassi) is a single mother to a young daughter named Rose (Furragia). The movie starts off with Rose celebrating her birthday. That night, she asks her mom to check under the bed for monsters. Her mom, Natalie, insists that there is no such thing as monsters. Who knew that those words would come back to haunt her.
One night, Natalie is getting ready to leave the clinic where she works when she encounters a mentally ill woman insisting she needs help. Natalie doesn’t help her. She closes up and leaves. A short time later she sees the same lady at a gas station. This time she catches her drinking bleach and the woman dies.
A few days later, Natalie experiences severe stomach pains. She then wakes up in a puddle of blood that resembles what it would look like if she gave birth. The problem is, there is no baby and she wasn’t pregnant.
What in the world is going on?
The encounter with the “crazy lady” kicks off a series of unusual and scary events for both Natalie and Rose. The events could potentially harm Rose, and cause Natalie to end up in jail for murdering a baby she never gave birth to.
What in the world is going on, and what does that “crazy lady” have to do with it? To find out, check out Surrogate. Look for it on Amazon now, and on Tube and Google TV on September 16, 2022.
I’ll be honest, when I first saw the trailer, I felt like this could possibly be a really good horror movie. I am a huge fan of horror movies, and I’m always on the look out for really good ones. Most horror movies these days are, let’s face it, ridiculous. They just don’t make horror movies the way they used to.
Anyway…
I thought this film had a lot of potential. Aside from a few scenes, I found this movie to be slow and a bit confusing. I honestly don’t see the connection between a missing girl and what was going on with Natalie and Rose. Maybe I missed something along the way, but I was left totally baffled as to what exactly was the reasoning behind the strange events that plagued Natalie and Rose, and the missing girl.
There were a few scenes here and there that had potential, but over all I just found the film a “hot mess.” I really wanted to like it, but it just wasn’t my “cup of tea.”
Please remember, I am only ONE person and this is just MY personal opinions. Other people rave about this movie. To each his own. Just like my mom used to always tell me, “one man’s meat is another man’s poison.” That means just because some loves/hates something, doesn’t mean others will feel the same.
If you are a true horror movie buff, you might want to pass on this title. If you are easily scared, then you might like this film. If you like gore, there is some visceral gore in this film, which I didn’t expect. I was surprised by it.
Kestie Morassi did a great job as Natalie. I “felt” for her and her situation. If I was in her shoes, I think I would totally lose my mind. She doesn’t. And she does whatever she can to save her daughter.
The ending of the film was weird. I did NOT expect that to happen at all. If you are looking for a happy ending, this film will surprise you. I thought I predicted how the film ended, but I was surprised that I missed the mark.
Below is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
