I try to make “smarter” food choices. I can’t say that I always do (I have a weakness for chocolate), but I try and make better decisions whenever possible.
I will be the first to admit that I don’t eat fruit (I’m just not a fruit eater), but I do eat vegetables. I also don’t drink as much water as I should be consuming (unless drinking coffee counts since it’s made WITH water – ha ha).
One thing I am really bad about is protein. It’s not that I don’t want to eat meats, it’s that I can’t eat meats.
I had weight loss surgery a few years back (lap band). The band doesn’t allow me to eat meat UNLESS I can really chew it (like mush!). Some meats are not easy to chew into a mush (seafood is). As a result, I’ve had meat (chicken, beef, turkey, pork…) literally get stuck. It hurts a lot and I end up having to throw up in order to get it unstuck (I know, TMI). After having this happen more times than I can to recall, I am weary when it comes to eating meats. I’ll eat it, but very little.
Meat is a good source of protein. So is eggs (I’ll eat them), beans and the aforementioned seafood. Still, I don’t eat nearly as much protein as I need to, try as I might.
I have tried drinking protein drinks in the past. I think I tried just about everyone out there, but I never found any that I like. They all taste pretty gross if you ask me.
My son makes protein a priority. Up until recently, he made sure to eat properly, drink a lot of water, and exercise. Sadly, his new job (he drives a tractor trailer) doesn’t allow him the opportunity to be as healthy and make good choices as he used to. Now he’s running into 7-11 at midnight to grab coffee and inhaling junk food from whatever fast food place he can find along his route. As for exercise, he hasn’t been to the gym in ages. He works until 2:00 AM (or later) in the morning, sleeps a good chunk of the day, gets up and starts all over again. On the weekends he catches up on errands and sleep.
My son does like to drink protein shakes. The cabinet has several different varieties. He likes different flavors, but his favorite is chocolate.
I’ve tried his protein drinks too, but I just can’t get into the taste of them. He said he didn’t like them to begin with either, but after a while they grew on him. That never happened for me.
Recently we were introduced to a new flavor of whey protein from Naked Nutrition.

I reviewed some cookies from Naked Nutrition a while back. You can read that review here – Naked Cookie – Protein Packed, Low Sugar Cookies.
You might ask why I just don’t continue to eat them in order to get some more protein in my diet. That is a valid question. The answer is because I don’t work during the summer months (I work in the school district), and therefore I don’t get paid. My husband also took a new job, which came with a hefty pay cut. Right now I’m not financially in a place to order those cookies on a regular basis. Hopefully down the road I will be able to.
Naked Nutrition recently introduced Lemonade Whey Protein Isolate to it’s every expanding product line.
Here is more information about the product, as per the brand.
Clear Naked Whey starts with 100% whey isolate powder and is then lightly flavored to create a refreshing, high-protein beverage that is perfect for any time of day. Meet your daily protein goals, and support muscle building and repair by taking Clear Naked Whey whenever you like.
Naked Nutrition’s products aren’t dressed up with additives like artificial sweeteners, flavors or colors like most brands, and we are committed to shortening the steps between our farms and you. Don’t let labels and big agribusiness fool you; additives are for their bottom line, not your health.

They even have Fruit Punch and Grape flavors too.
I received the lemonade flavor to try out. It looks just like a lemonade mix (the kind you’d mix with water), and it smells like lemonade too. Not a freshly made glass of lemonade, but you will think “lemonade” when you smell it (at least I did).
I did try this flavor, in hopes that I would like it. Sadly, I did not. Protein drinks are just not my thing. My son on the other hand, he really likes it. In fact, he’s pretty much gone through the entire container, and it’s a big container. I see him with the shaker mixing it up from time to time, often first thing when he gets up.

He was honest with me and said that the first time he tried it he wasn’t too sure about the flavor. But like it was with the other flavors he has tried over the years, it grew on him.
It’s crazy to think you can DRINK protein like that. Growing up, eggs and meats were the only sources (that an Tofu… but Tofu is gross!). Now I just have to find a protein drink that appeals to my “picky” stomach. Ha ha.
