When I was a young girl I was madly in love with horses. I couldn’t get enough of them. I read horse books almost exclusively, I had plenty of horse toys (I have a lot of Beyer horses), and we even owned a horse. He was my sister’s horse (she bought him), but I helped her to take care of him and I rode him. He bit me, stepped on my bare foot and threw me off his back… but I still loved him. His named was Poco de Loco, which means “a little crazy” in Spanish. Ha! He was A LOT crazy.
Now playing in select theaters is DreamWorks Animations’ newest animated feature, Spirit Untamed. It’s being released by Universal.
The film follows the adventures of Lucky and her loyal companion, a horse named Spirit
Spirit Untamed is not only a sequel coming 19 years after the release of the original Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, it’s also based on the hugely popular TV series Spirit Riding Free, which premiered on Netflix in 2017.
Just in time for the film’s release, PLAYMOBIL has created a beautiful new line of playsets based on scenes and events from the film. You can see all of the sets here. The sets range in price from $8.99 up to $99.99 (the pricey item is a beautiful house!).
PLAYMOBILE was kind enough to send me a few sets to check out. I received the review the following sets.
Dip into Lucky’s fascinating world and experience many exciting adventures. Together with her wild mustang Spirit, Lucky visits the Miradero Festival. There is so much to discover here: sales stands filled with hand-made toys, flowers and delicious corn sticks, colorful fairy lights and cheerful music. Spirit is naturally more interested in the fresh fruit in the basket. Lucky enjoys the cheerful festival atmosphere. After a short time she happily starts dancing on the dance floor. Just in time for its release at cinemas the new DreamWorks Spirit playsets from PLAYMOBIL are now available for young and old fans. Set includes Lucky and mustang Spirit, father Jim and Snips, two sales stalls with toys, sweets, fruit and flowers, as well as rotating platforms on which the characters can dance.
PLAYMOBIL thought of everything when they created this fun set – from the banners and lights that hang from the tree, to the corn on a stick the people can cook over the fire. There is even plenty of goodies for the horses including apples and carrots.
I didn’t know you can roast corn over an open fire. This set comes with two “sticks” and several “corn on the cobs” for the figurines to cook with.
I LOVE the little lemons that go inside the pitcher to make lemonade. How adorable!
The lemons are removeable, so you should keep that in mind (they are balls, so they will roll).
If you have little ones at home, you should know that there are a lot of little pieces in this set (possible choking hazard).
The set comes with bases for the figures to stand on. This is the first time I’ve seen these in PLAYMOBIL sets. I guess they are helpful so that the figures don’t topple over. It also helps them to spin around, as if they are dancing, which is a fun idea.
The figures stand up just fine without the stands are well.
I have not seen the movie yet, so I am not sure the reason why, but Spirit has a bag that he wears which contains letters. I’m assuming he is delivering the mail?
The set comes with a pair of traditional fans that Lucky (or any of the figures) can dance around with. Cute!
This set comes with a variety of instruments – guitar, flute, tambourine and trumpet. The guitar is pictured above with the tambourine that Jim and Snips are playing. The instruments have “handles” on them, making them easier for the figures to hold on to, as you can see on the flute pictured below.
I did have a bit of a problem getting the base of the basket to snap on. I had to have my husband help me with that. I wish the basket could have come already assembled. It seems silly to have to put the bottom in.
I also had a hard time with the “string” that you need to attach the stand to the tree, as well as the umbrella to the tree. There is a rounded end that you need to slip some pieces over (the pieces that the lanterns attach to). I could not get them to fit over the “nub” (rounded end). I ended up cutting that end off. It still hung on to the tree just fine.
You can see some of the “string” in this picture.
Other than the string and the basket, I had no problem putting this set together. Thankfully there was little assembly and only three stickers to attach.
Being a horse freak, Abigail is also an enthusiastic rodeo rider. Full of enthusiasm she tries her hand at the various disciplines together with her horse Boomerang. Whether it’s Barrel Race or Pole Bending, Abigail and Boomerang cut a good figure everywhere. Let’s go Abigail! Playset contains DreamWorks Spirit character Abigail with her horse Boomerang, saddle, bridle and a rodeo sign. The character can ride the horse.
I like that this set is a nice addition to the larger playset.
There is a removeable blanket and saddle for Boomerang (the horse), as well as a bridle. PLAYMOBIL even includes reins that Abigail can hold on to as she rides.
As you can see from the photo, Abigail easily fits on Boomerang’s back. They made the horse figure “skinny” so that PLAYMOBIL figures can easily “ride” it.
The rodeo sign is a fun addition to the larger playsets so you can re-create an exciting festival.
Young Lucky and Mum Milagro (#70699)
Milagro, Lucky’s mother, ran away from home at sixteen and joined the travelling circus El Circo dos Grillos. There she found a family and became an adored horse acrobat until she met Lucky’s father Jim and settled in Miradero. With pleasure Lucky remembers the first happy years she spent together with her mother in Miradero. One of her favorite activities was going on picnics. Milagro packed a picnic basket with drinks and fruit and the two of them found a cozy spot in nature. Set contains the DreamWorks Spirit characters Lucky and her mom Milagro, a picnic basket, two bottles, an apple and other extras for a leisurely outing.
This is a cute set to add to the Spirit Untamed collection.
I like that this set was super easy to put together. I still had a hard time getting the bottom fo the basket in (it was me, not the product).
There is a lot of detail in this set, from the ribbons that adorn Lucky and Milagro’s hair, to the sweet little butterfly that flutters onto their basket full of flowers.
You can see all the details in the photos. I love how PLAYMOBIL thinks of everything to help bring imaginations alive.
Individually these are fun sets, but I think they are best enjoyed when you can combine them with other sets – either from the Spirit Untamed series, or similar sets.
The sets featured in this post range in price from $8.99 (Young Lucky and Mum Milagro) to $39.99 (Miradero Festival). You can find these and all the Spirit Untamed sets (there are over a dozen different sets) on the PLAYMOBIL website. Visit them at PLAYMOBIL.us (notice that it’s .us, NOT .com).
You can also check out PLAYMOBIL on social media. That is the best way to find out about new products, brand news, sales and more. All of their links can be found on their website.
You can check out the movie on it’s official website, DreamWorks.com/movies/Spirit-Untamed. I’m not sure if the film has any social media pages, but you can check out DreamWorks on social media.
