My family and I are huge fans of the Shrek movie franchise. Whenever we see one of the films come on television we always end up watching it. The original film is our favorite one. We even quote lines from that film.
We were sent the complete movie collection (all four movies) to watch a Shrek movie marathon (aka #Swampathon). I wasn’t sure if my teens would go for it – but they did! We also received other fun goodies like plush Shrek character key chains, green popcorn (it tasted apple flavored), Shrek mugs, Shrek ears, Gingy cookie cutters and Pin the Tail on Donkey game.
So that no one got tired of seeing Shrek and friends I split the movies up during the day. We didn’t watch them back to back. Instead we watched the first two films back to back, then watched the third film in afternoon and the last film in the evening. That gave my kids time to get things done (my son had a final to study for) and me time to prepare some fun Shrek related treats for my family.
We started the day off with a breakfast Donkey would have loved – Waffles! Of course I had to “Shrek them up” a bit, so I topped them with green tinted whipped topping and gummy snakes.
I almost forgot! The day before our #Swampathon, when I was at work, I drew a picture of Shrek and Donkey to get into the movie spirit. I tried to draw the dragon (Donkey’s wife) but I messed up. That is why the picture is cut out.
I’m not an artist, but I do love to doodle. I think Donkey turned out good – even though you can only see the top of his head.
I made an assortment of goodies throughout the day. My kids were happy to try them out. My husband – not so much. I think all the green turned him off.
The top photo is Apple-Pear applesauce. Next is lime Jell0 with pineapple, followed by vanilla pudding I tinted green. In the last photo I made cupcakes with green frosting and gummy snakes hidden inside. The frosting looked greener in person.
I thought about green colored lunch and dinner foods, but I thought that might be overkill. So we just ate regular, non-Shrek foods.
Pin the Tail on Donkey (pictured above) was fun. I actually planned on making my own Pin the Tail on Donkey game. I’m glad that I was sent one to use. I was going to try and make one out of poster board and cardstock. I might have been able to doodle Donkey from behind. Tails are easy enough to make.
We also received green face paint. No one in my family was brave enough to wear it.
I completely forgot to make the Gingy cookies. I had a recipe to make them from scratch, but I’m not a good baker so I opted to use a pre-made gingerbread mix instead. I totally forgot about them. When I remembered it was after 9:00 PM at night and I figured it was too late (plus I was tired). It’s OK. I’ll make them another day.
My daughter got creative with the cupcakes I made and made a Shrek face out of some of the goodies I had available for my family.
I’m impressed. She did a good job.
Of course we had to have green beverages to drink. I picked up a green juice for my family to enjoy with their frosty Shrek mugs.
My whole family was a bit reluctant to try the green popcorn, but after I was brave enough to give it a try and realized it had an apple flavor to it, they all tried it (except my husband). My kids liked it too.
Personally, I thought it was a fun challenge to come up with movie themed goodies for my family. I thought it was going to be hard, but in all honesty it was pretty easy to come up with fun things my family would enjoy.
I was a great day over all. Even my teens enjoyed Pin the Tail on Donkey, which I thought they would grumble about thinking it was a “kiddie game.”
I also thought everyone had enough of Shrek. The next day Shrek came on one of the premium channels and my husband and I ended up watching it again. What can I say, you can never get too much of Shrek.

Look for the Shrek four movie pack where ever movies are sold. You can also look for a special 15th Anniversary edition of the film as well.
Are you a fan of Shrek? Which film is your favorite? Which is your favorite Shrek character?
