Anyone who knows me personally knows that I will avoid taking any kind of “medication” unless I have no choice. I prefer to take more natural, homeopathic remedies whenever possible.
When I have a common cold I usually let it take it’s course without taking anything for it. Unlike my dear husband who stocks up on cold medications the moment he sneezes or has the slightest sniffle.
I can usually get over a common cold in a matter of a few days. I will take over the counter medications if natural remedies fail to help.
If there is one thing I can’t stand, aside from being congested, is having a sore or itchy, dry throat. I make sure to drink plenty of water but sometimes I need something a little more.
I can’t tolerate throat lozenges that make your throat feel numb. A few drops do that. Blah! I hate that numb feeling. I want relief, I don’t need to numb my throat unless it’s totally inflamed, in which case I will seek out medical help. I prefer drops that keep my throat soothed and moist.
Many years ago, when I was a young girl, my mom used to give me throat drops that were some what soft and had a pleasant taste. Let’s face it, most throat drops taste awful. The ones my mom used to give me had an enjoyable, pleasant taste.
Over the years I forgot the name of those throat drops. I remembered them well, I just couldn’t remember the brand name. I didn’t even think they made them anymore. After all it’s been 30+ year since I was a kid.
I found out that the throat drops I was thinking about were made by Pine Bros. They had been making throat drops for 140 years. Their drops were available in Honey and Cherry flavors.
In the 90’s the company shut down (unbeknown to me) and their throat drops ceased to exist.
I’m happy to say that Pine Bros. is back in business. Someone had bought the rights to the brand and has been working hard to re-introduce the brand back on store shelves. Not only that they have new flavors available too. Along with the original Honey and Cherry flavors, Pine Bros. drops are also going to be available in Lemon-Citrus and Black Licorice. I am VERY excited about the Black Licorice. I ♥ Black Licorice!
I’ve had the opportunity to try out both the Honey and Cherry drops. Although it’s been about 30+ years since the last time I had them, from what I recall, they taste the same way they used to taste when I was a kid. They are also some what soft and have the same shape that I remember from my youth.
Unlike other throat drops, Pine Bros. has a more “candy-like” quality to them. They don’t have a medicinal taste. That is a good thing, and a bad thing. The good thing is that they are enjoyable. The bad thing is that young children might think they ARE candy. Just like any medicine you need to keep them out of reach from young children.
Pine Bros. throat drops are for the temporary relief of minor discomfort in sore mouth and sore throat. They are intended for adults and children over 3 years old.
To use simply let 1-2 drops dissolve in your throat as needed. Do not chew them.
If your sore throat lasts for more then 2 days you should seek medical attention just to be on the safe side.
Pine Bros. drops are made on machinery that processes peanuts and tree nuts, so people with allergies need to be aware of that.
Pine Bros. throat drops are slowly making their way to store shelves across the country. If they are not available near by you can contact Pine Bros. and they can see what they can do to bring them to your area. They are also available for purchase online on the Pine Bros. website (www.PineBrothers.com). They are available in bags (32 drop count) or round “pucks” (26 drop count). Bags sell for around $3.50 and pucks for $2.99.
They are also available at CVS, VermontCountryStore.com and Drugstore.com. You can also follow the company on Facebook (http://www.Facebook.com/pages/Pine-Bros/116624165076096) and on Twitter (www.Twitter.com/PineBros).

Oh yes, I remember these. I too took them as a child but haven’t seen them in years. They were my favorite thing to take when I had a cold. Much better than Luden’s (I believe that’s the name). These days I prefer the Ricola cherry ones. But if I should see these Pine Bros. in the store I’m definitely grabbing some.

hi, cvs carries them now. $3.49 for the packaged one. (they are in a bag)
as a kid, i would buy boxes and boxes of them and eat them as candy.
i will tell you this, they don’t taste the same.
the original ones, had a true cherry taste as with the honey ones.
these new ones have no flavor. they sure look the same, but the taste isn’t there. the original cherry ones would make your mouth pucker, with a very cherry flavor.
i bough all 3 flavors. the honey ones, don’t have that distinct honey flavor either.
the new one’s all have a mild taste to them. their ok, but nowhere taste as the original ones… 🙁

I didn’t realize that I remembered these until they started promoting them recently – I used to “get a cold” just for the cough drops.
