My family and live in a very small condo. We refer to it as a “shoe box” because it literally feels that small. We have very little storage and there is hardly room for us let alone any thing else.
Because of the size of our condo we need to take a lot of things into consideration before bringing in a new piece of furniture. Certain things are a “no brainer” like a new kitchen table and chairs (we are in desperate need of a new one). Other things, like bookcases, we have to make sure we can put it to good use before bringing it into our home.
A few months ago I was sent to review two beautiful pieces of furniture from Sauder. If you would like to read my post you can find it here – Finding the perfect piece of furniture from Sauder.com.
I received to review an entertainment center and a wonderful bookcase.
TV Stand from the Beginnings Collection
Bookcase from the Barrister Lane Collection
We did pick up the entertainment center for the kid’s room for their television as well as a place for them to store their school books. After all, that is what it’s intended purchase is. Most people see it and “T.V. stand and/or entertainment center”.
I had another great idea for this piece of furniture from Sauder. I think it works out much better in our hallway.
We have a long, empty hallway. I wanted a place where we could put our car keys so that we don’t lose them, mail, and a place for the kids to put library books that need to be returned.
I did a search and didn’t see anything that really stood out to me. I didn’t want anything that was too big, or too little. Then I thought about the television stand in the kid’s room. It was just the right size and height for what I had in mind.
I ended up getting just a plain, simple piece of furniture for the television and equipment and put the entertainment center from Sauder in the hallway. Now I have a place to toss my keys and leave out mail that my husband needs to drop off at the post office for me.
I be honest, I like this piece of furniture much more in the hallway.
The center part is where my husband keeps the CDs that he likes to listen to in his car.
In the above photo you can also see a library book on one of the shelves that needed to be returned.
I love the bookcase. LOVE! LOVE! LOVE it! Not only does it look beautiful but it also came with brackets that allow you to lable your books. You can do them alphabetically like they do at the library or any other way that makes sense to you. That is exactly how we used our bookcase from Sauder.
I have A LOT of movies. I get movies sent to me frequently to review (check out my movie section and you’ll see what I mean). Many of the movies I donate to the local library after I am doing reviewing them. Others I give to friends, neighbors and family members. I keep some of them as well as purchase movies on my own.
Our movie collection has taken over our entertainment center in the living room, and our cabinets are overflowing with movies too. It makes it difficult to find a specific movie when they are all over the place. That is when I had an ingenious idea – why not re-purpose the bookcase in the kid’s room and use it as a place to store our movies instead. That way I can use the label brackets to make note of the movie genres so that it’s easier for us to find the specific movie that we are looking for.
I just realized that I missed a spot dusting on the horror movies. Sorry about that. 🙂
Moving all the movies from the cabinets and entertainment center is going to take a while. I work part time now so I don’t have as much free time as I used to. What I am trying to do is sort through them so I know which ones to donate, which ones to give away and which ones to keep. I also have to figure out how I want to arrange them. Currently I have a horror section (as see above) and a family friend section (also seen above). I also have drama, sci-fi, Disney and my kid’s movies.
The bookcase as 10 sections, so I have plenty of room to be more specific with my movie titles.
To be honest, I prefer the bookcase being used for our movie collection rather then it’s original intended purpose. With so may movies I needed something that was big enough and easily accessible.
I am very pleased with my choices from Sauder. We have purchased Sauder products in the past (mostly desks). I’ve always been impressed by the quality. Now I’m even more impressed because a lot of their furniture can be used in different ways.
I love being able to re-purpose furniture. I love that show Flea Market Flip where people re-purpose furniture and other finds and try and resell the for more money. I even created a Pinterest pin board with ideas for different ways to use furniture. You can find it here – She Scribes Furniture Pinterest Board.
Sauder furniture is pretty easy to assemble. My husband didn’t have any problem with either of our pieces and had them both assembled in a short amount of time.
Sauder also has a wide variety of furniture options in different price ranges so you are sure to find what you are looking for at a price you can afford.
Sauder furniture is designed with functionality in mind. You can use furniture in whatever way you see fit. A nightstand is only a nightstand if you make it one. That can be said about the television stand we picked up from Sauder that is now a table, and how our bookcase turned into our movie “center”.
If you are in the market for new furniture add Sauder as one of your shopping destinations. Visit Sauder.com to check out all the available furniture and collections.
What do you think of how I am now using our furniture? What other uses can you come up with for our bookcase and entertainment center/TV stand?
Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments section of this post.
