When you are driving alone in your car, or cleaning around your home, do you crank up your favorite songs and sing along with them? I sure do. Sometimes belting out a few tunes is a great way to relieve stress and let the pressures of the day float away – in song.
I happen to live show tunes and songs from musicals. Movies like the Sound of Music, Grease, West Side Story and The Music Man are filled with wonderful songs.
Here’s a funny story about Grease. My cousins and I were so obessed with the movie. We listend to the album so many times I think we wore it out. We also had the movie companion book.
One summer we decided to put a play on for nearby relatives. We charged them .25 cents each. The play we put on was Grease. My cousin played the role of Sandy because she had really blonde hair and I played the role of Danny. Our other cousin pretty much played all the other roles. Not only did we act out the movie we sang the songs too.
I still own my copy of the book – the same one we used back in the late 70’s when we put the play on for relatives.
I guess the Grease equivalent would be High School Musical, which was popular when my kids were younger. I have to admit that I find some of the songs in High School Musical fun too.
Did you know that Netflix offers many wonderful musical movies that the whole family can enjoy – even ones for younger children? Here are a few examples.
1. Shrek the Musical
2. High School Musical
3. Grease
4. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
5. Footloose
6. The Phantom of the Opera
7. Camp Rock
For younger kids check out these films.
1. Mulan
2. Pocahontas
3. The Prince of Egypt
4. Leap Frog: Numberland
5. Rock-A-Doodle
I was actually able to get my kids to watch Grease and Footloose. They won’t admit that they liked the films, but I know they did. It’s hard not to. The songs are contagious and the dancing is amazing.
We are planning on watching Chitty Chitty Bang Bang soon. My husband and I watched it not too long ago (not on Netflix, on another channel). I’m going to have my kids watch it so they can experience the wonderful movie too.
Oh great… now the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang song is going through my head!
