Did you know that September if National Honey Month. It saddens me to think that we might not have honey, or many other types of produce, in the next few years if the honey bee population keeps dwindling as rapidly as it is.
I personally think that stuff like the importance of honey bees (as well as other important ecological things) should be taught in school starting at a very young age. Case in point, towards the end of this past school year one of the students found a honey bee that was crawling across the concrete on the playground. It must have been injured some how. Instead of leaving it alone, the student was going to step on it and kill it. Thankfully I intervened and scooped up the bee and put it on some clover growing on the grass near by.
I took a few of the students out into the field that was overflowing with clover and showed them all the honey bees that were buzzing from flower to flower. I used this situation as a learning “tool” to talk to the kids about the importance of protecting the honey bees and what terribly things can, and will, happen should they die off.
There is another way – a fun way – to teach children about honey bees too. It’s the new kit from the brand I’m the Chef Too.
I’m the Chef Too is an educational cooking journey company that sells kits and subscriptions that not only teach children how to cook and bake, but also teach them fun and useful information along the way.
According to the brand;
Our “Choose Your Adventure Kits” infuse STEAM based concepts into recipes, giving children the creative confidence to learn in a unique meaningful way. Children are creating, inventing, designing, engineering, and questioning all through the world of cooking! These learning experiences include inquiry based learning and problem solving as they bake their way through some of their favorite topics!
Kits are sold individually in their online shop, or you can purchase a subscription for 3, 6 or 12 months (use the discount code SUB20 at check out to save 20% off the subscription rate).
Here is just a sampling of the types of kits that I’m the Chef Too offers customers.

I received to review from I’m the Chef Too their Honey Bee Bagels box.
The box came with everything you need to make bagels, as well as a cool honeycomb experience and candle making accessories.
The kit includes;
- Adventure Recipe
- Pre measured Dry Ingredients
- Specialty Supplies
- STEAM Activity
- Activity Guide Card
This fun food adventure blends food, STEM, and the Arts into educational fun. It teaches children about ecology, chemistry as well as art.
I was very impressed that everything came pre-measured (ingredients). That makes things A LOT easier, especially for younger children who might find using measuring cups a bit tricky.
I did not make anything in this kit BECAUSE I’ve been waiting for my niece to come over and do it with me. I could have easily made the bagels and candle, but I wanted to see everything through the eyes of a child. As of this writing I have not been able to coordinate a day for my sister-in-law to drop my niece off for a few hours. WHEN it finally happens, I will update this post to share my personal experience with it.
I wanted to get my review of this box up right away because I wanted to give people the opportunity to order a box or subscription so that you have something fun (and educational) to do this summer with your child or grandchild. Before you know it, the kids will be back to school.
I read over the cards that came with this kit. The bagel recipe actually is really easy (who knew). I might just make it on my own (I’d love to make cinnamon raisin bagels. Yum!).
A kit such as this not only is fun and educational, but also opens up a dialogue between parent/grandparent and child. For example, this kit is about bees. You can talk about the importance of bees, your favorite foods that would not be able to be produced without bees, your favorite ways to enjoy honey and what you can do to help save the honey bees. Maybe this kit will inspire you to learn more about bees and maybe even do something more, like create a bee home. You can make one out of paper towel tubes and rolled up paper. You can Google it to learn the many ways to make them.
This would be such a wonderful family project you can work on together all summer.
A subscription from I’m the Chef Too would make a great birthday gift for a child. It would also make a great gift this holiday season (think “Christmas in July”).
As a parent, I love this idea. If my kids were younger I would definitely look into a subscription for them. Both of my kids have always had an interest in cooking and baking (I think my daughter is a better cook than I am).
I also work with children. I would love to incorporate some of these ideas into a project I can do with them. I don’t have access to the kitchen at work, so we can’t cook or bake anything, but perhaps I can incorporate some of the great information I’ve learned from this kit to a project the kids can do together (or individually).
