Being told you have Diabetes is a life changing thing. You can no longer just eat or drink anything you want. You have to make note of every tiny morsel that enters your body. Suddenly you find that the foods and beverages you love are no longer an option for you. That is the hard part. I have such a sweet tooth that it’s hard to control myself sometimes. I admit that there are more times than I care to remember where I ate something I technically shouldn’t have simply because I couldn’t tame the “cravings monster”.
When I was younger I was VERY obese (360+ pounds!). I was diabetic but I was able to get off medication when I lost nearly 200 pounds. My doctor did warn me that the diabetes would come back, most likely in my 40’s and he was right. Sigh…
I will enjoy candies that are non-sugar free (within moderation and not often), simply because I’m not a big fan of sugar free candies. They often taste artificial or leave a horrible after taste in your mouth.
My great-grandfather used to always have candy lying around their home (might explain where my sweet tooth comes from). He was a big fan of hard candies and licorice. One of his favorite candies was Werther’s Original. Werther’s is a caramel flavored hard candy. Have you ever had them before? They are oh-so-good! They are made with real butter and real cream. They are rich and flavorful and hard to stop at just one. I could easily go through an entire bag in one day. 🙂
Being diabetic I can no longer do things like that. I have to make sure to eat sensibly, even if it means forgoing things that I used to love.
Werther’s has a line of SUGAR FREE candies that taste just as good as their “sugared” counterparts.
Werther’s sent me samples of all of their Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candy to try out. I was unaware until now that Werther’s came in different flavors. All I’ve ever had was their original caramel variety. Werther’s is now available in sugar free Caramel Coffee, Caramel Apple, Carmel Cinnamon and sugar free original.
The sugar free candies contain only 8 calories for each individual piece. You read that right – only 8 calories! Each piece also contains 3 grams of carbs. When you are a diabetic you not only count the sugar grams but also carbs because carbs turn into sugar in your body. The more carbs you have the more your sugar intake increases.
A serving size is considered 5 pieces which amounts to 40 calories and about 15 grams of carbohydrates. How many other tasty snacks that you can think of are only 40 calories?
I was concerned the sugar free Werther’s candies would have that horrible artificial taste and after taste. I was pleasantly surprised that they didn’t. When I first tried them I thought something was “off” but after a few samples I no longer thought that way. In fact they remind me a lot of the original Werther’s.
I have never tried the other flavors before until now. The Caramel Cinnamon flavor is really good. I can’t get enough of that flavor. It reminds me a bit of a “hot” candy with a hint of caramel flavor.
I also really enjoy the Caramel Apple. Believe it or not it does taste like apple. And I love caramel covered apples, like the kind we get from the country fair. Since I can no longer have caramel covered apples from the fair the Werther’s Original Sugar Free candies are a great substitute.
I have a cute little candy jar on my desk (kind of a miniature version of the Whether’s candy jar you see on TV). Mine is filled with Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candies. Now when I am working at my desk and I crave something sweet and flavorful all I need to do is reach for one of the Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candies. They are individually wrapped so you can also tuck some into your purse, backpack, or work lunch. You can enjoy them anytime, anywhere.
If you are diabetic (or know someone who is) or maybe even someone who wants to watch their weight (remember the are only 8 calories each!), you should check out the Werther’s Original Sugar Free Candy Facebook page.

I love Werther’s . They are good and buttery tasting. I have tried the green apple to but not the caramel cinnamon or coffee. My son is diabetic too and agrees that sugar free candy doesnt taste as good, But I will get these for him to try. thanks

My grandfather also loved Werther’s and always had some around on in hid pocket. I have tried the sugar free and love them. they really don’t have that nasty after taste. I haven’t tried the Caramel Apple or the Caramel Cinnamon. They both sound great. I will have to look for them. Thanks!

I have always loved Werther’s and my mom would always have them in her purse! It always smelled of them when you would open it. I loved that! My dad has diabetes and a sweet tooth. I try to give him some kind of a treat for special occasions and to have at home when he visits. So glad they have sugar-free! He will be thrilled! Thanks for the post.
