Available today (February 11, 2014) is the action adventure film The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box.
The film stars Sam Neil (Jurassic Park), Michael Sheen (Twilight series), Aneurin Barnard (STARZ’s The White Queen) and Ioan Gruffudd (Fantastic Four).
Adventurer Otto Luger (Neil) is hot on the trailer of the legendary Midas Box. He needs to be stopped before he finds it because whomever possess the box can become very powerful.
A special secret service is trying to find the box before Luger can. One agent, Will Charity, has come close but he is wounded. He seeks help from other agents, Charles (Gruffudd) and Catherine, he puts them and their young sons, Mariah (Barnard) and Felix in jeapordy.
Knowing they might be captured, Catherine give her sons two necklaces, each with a piece of a charm. She tells them not to let the necklaces out of their sight and to run and hide. The boy try to hide but younger brother Felix is taken hostage by Luger’s men.
Will Charity is able to rescue Mariah before he is taken hostage too. He briefs Mariah on what is going on and sends him to an island resort to look for his brother.
Once on the island a lot of secrets unfold including an island monster, missing children plenty of secret passages.
The fate of the world, and his brother’s life, rests on Mariah and his ability to find the Midas Box before Luger. Will he succeed? To find out you need to pick up a copy of The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box available today where most films are sold.
I have the DVD copy of the film which has a bonus feature of the Making of The Adventurer: The Curse of the Midas Box which gives you cast interviews and a behind the scenes look at the film.
This is a family friendly film. It’s rated PG but I didn’t see anything wrong with it except for some fighting (not really violent).
The film is set back in Victorian time (late 1800’s). Some of the technology in the film seemed ahead of it’s time, making the film a bit of a fantasy too.
I think the film makers did a great job keeping with the Victorian theme, especially when it came to costumes. Mariah’s hair seemed a bit out of place for such times, but I guess that just gives him more character.
If you are into films like the Indian Jones series you might film The Adventurer a bit slow and “lackluster”. I would consider this a child-friendly version of the same action/adventure genre. I can visualize a lot of young children wanting to go off on an adventure after watching this film. I think it’s geared more toward ages 6+ and up, plus families as a whole. I can also see this film spinning off into a series of films. I think viewers will want to see more of Mariah and Will Charity, especially because Charity is the master of disguises.
This was a good movie. A bit slow at times but over all it was good. It would be ideal for a family movie night.
Here is the film’s trailer for your enjoyment.
