Coming to theaters across the country this weekend is the heart-tugging drama Boy Erased. The film stars Lucas Hedges, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Joel Edgerton, Cherry Jones and Michael “Flea” Balzary, to name a few.
I have seen the trailer for the film (I’ll share it below). It looks really “deep.” I have a feeling it would bring me to tears. I haven’t seen the film yet, but I hope it has a happy ending.
Boy Erased tells the courageous story of Jared Eamons (Lucas Hedges), the son of a Baptist pastor in a small American town, who must overcome the fallout of being outed to his parents (Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe). His parents struggle with reconciling their love for their son with their beliefs. Fearing a loss of family, friends, and community, Jared is pressured into attending a conversion therapy program. While there, Jared comes into conflict with its leader (Joel Edgerton) and begins his journey to finding his own voice and accepting his true self.
Check out the trailer.
The film has a high score on Rotten Tomatoes and gets a high ranking on Flixter too. The film hasn’t been fully released yet either, so I suspect it’s ranking will be even higher. That’s pretty good for a film that hasn’t been fully released yet.
Boy Erased is based on the book by the same name. The book is a memoir written by Garrard Conley about his experience with conversion therapy.
According to Wikipedia;
Conversion therapy is the pseudoscientific practice of trying to change an individual’s sexual orientation from homosexual or bisexual to heterosexual using psychological or spiritual interventions.
I haven’t read the book (yet), so I am curious to see what transpires at the place where he was sent for conversion therapy. Exactly what do they do there?
The film has already been released in some areas of the country, but will be released nationwide this weekend.

Yes I’d like to see this movie. I have a family member who is gay as well as a good friend. I also have religious friends who think you can change a person born gay which I don’t believe and I am religious too.
My views of God are that he is more loving and benevolent rather than judgmental like many people who claim to believe in him

I grew up with a lot of evangelical influences and as a kid, it always broke my heart how much animosity was given towards people who lived their truth. I think the message is still so important!
