Earlier this summer I had the opportunity to review George A. Romero’s Deadtime Stories, Volume 1. You can read my review here, https://www.shescribes.com/2011/07/george-a-romero-presents-deadtime-stories-volume-1.html.
I knew that another volume was going to be released shortly after the first one. Volume two was released on September 20, 2011.
I was excited when I received the opportunity to review the second volume.
As with the first volume there are three individual horror stories on the DVD. In volume two the stories featured are The Gorge, On Sabbath Hill and Dust.
The Gorge is the story of three friends who go into the mountains to explore some caverns. Tragically there is an avalanche that traps the friends deep within a cave. One of the hikers is seriously hurt too. Out of desperation two of the hikers do the unspeakable to their injured friend. I’m sure if you think about it you might figure out what they did to him.
This movie was a total gore-fest. Gross! Gross! Gross! On the gross scale it’s a 10. As for being scary this movie was not. Not even in the slightest, sad to say.
The next movie, On Sabbath Hill, is about a handsome college professor. He has an ideal life with a beautiful wife, two children and a lovely home. Of course that was not enough for him. He also carried on an affair with a beautiful young lady who was in his class.
After one of their little trysts the young lady informs him that she is pregnant. The professor was not amused and asked her about getting an abortion. She refused saying she wanted to keep the child.
The pressure of being pregnant with a married man’s child was too much for her to bare. She ends up committing suicide in front of her professor and classmates.
The movie does not end there. Her spirit comes back to haunt him to the point that he cannot handle it anymore.
This movie was not as gory as the first one, however there is an excessive amount of blood (A LOT of blood!). If you get grossed out by the sight of blood there is no way you can watch On Sabbath Hill.
The last movie is called Dust. I like the plot to this story and I could see it’s potential. A man lovingly takes care of his dying wife who has cancer. During the day he goes to work at a security guard at a local laboratory. One night he learns from one of the scientists that dust from the planet Mars has the potential to cure cancer. Out of love for his wife he steals some of the dust.
The dust worked! His wife was miraculously better, but not without side effects.
Up until this point I loved this story. It had a great plot and I could see a lot of potential in this story. That is until they introduced the biggest side effect – an insatiable hunger for sex. His wife could not get enough of it. She wanted it so much that it was soon too bothersome for the husband to handle.
The dust also did not last for very long so the man had to steal more from the lab in order to keep his wife healthy.
I won’t giveaway much more to the story. Let’s just say there was a lot of sex, nudity and a rather obvious ending.
Overall the movie was OK. It’s not going to make my top 10 list. The movie didn’t have any of those “jump scares” that make you leap out of your seat. As far as the fear factor goes this movie has none. But if you are a fan of over-the-top gory films then you will enjoy George A. Romero: Deadtime Stories Volume 2.
A die hard horror movie fan will find this movie laughable. If you are squeamish over gore and blood, then this is one movie you don’t want to see. This movie is stictly for gore fans.
Even though the movie is not one of my favorites I still thing George A. Romero is a master of horror. Over the years he has made movies that made me want to lock the doors, turn on all the lights and hide under the covers.
Here is the movie’s trailer for your enjoyment.
