Has this ever happened to you? You are on a long car trip with your kids (or even someone else’s kids) and you cannot agree on what music to listen to? The kids want to listen to the garbage that is on the airwaves these days and the adults (us) want to listen to music we enjoyed growing up. It’s nearly impossible to find a happy medium. Trust me, I speak from experience.
For years my husband and I have tried to get our kids to listen to “our” music. My daughter refers to it as “old people’s music”. In her world, filled with rainbows and unicorns, “old” refers to anything pre-dating 2008! Ha Ha.
We have managed to get the kids to like some Michael Jackson songs and a few Stevie Wonder songs too. At least its a step in the right direction.
I think I might have a solution to the battle of the music situation. Available today, February 8, 2011, is the soundtrack to the movie Gnomeo and Juliet, featuring classics from Sir Elton John. What makes the soundtrack appealing to younger kids is that Elton has a duet on the album with Lady Ga Ga who the kids are all “ga ga” (no pun intended…well maybe a little) about. Also featured on the album is a remark of a classic Elton John song sung by popular recording artist Nelly Furtado.
Gnomeo and Julietfeatures several classic hits from Elton John. Gnomeo and Juliet is going to create a whole new generation of Elton John fans, thanks to the release of the movie. Now both adults and kids can enjoy the same iconic songs.
Featured on the Gnome0 and Juliet soundtrack are the following songs.
– Hello Hello. This is a duet with Elton John and Lady Ga Ga. This is a really sweet pop song. This song is heard in the part of the movie when Gnomeo and Juliet meet for the first time. Unlike other Lady Ga Ga songs (which tend to be weird) this song is really nice and something both adults and children will find themselves singing along to. In the movie you’ll hear the actual duet. On the album the song is sung by Elton John as a solo.
– Crocodile Rock– Even though this is a classic Elton John song, this version is sung by pop star Nelly Furtado. It’s actually a really fun version. You can dance to it! This is the same version that is heard in the movie. I love it! You can even hear Gnomeo and Juliet’s names mentioned in the song.
– Saturday Night’s Alright (for Fighting) – This is a classic Elton John song which is also sung by Elton on the soundtrack. If you are a fan of Elton John you are sure to enjoy this “blast from the past”.
– Don’t Go Breaking My Heart– This is a duet featuring Elton John and Kiki Dee. Another great classic song.
– Love Builds a Garden– This is a new song by Elton John made specifically for Gnomeo and Juliet. It’s a beautiful song. Its also very sad. You know how well Elton can sing sad songs. This song is perfect for this movie. The scene it is heard in actually made a tear well up in my eye.
– Your Song– This is THE CLASSIC Elton John song. Elton even said himself that it was one of his favorite songs from his catelog. I can’t even listen to this song without it getting caught in my head and it plays over and over again.
♫…And you can tell everybody this is your song. It might be quite simple but now that it’s done, I hope you don’t mind. I hope you don’t mind that I put down in words. How wonderful life is while you’re in the world…♫
– Rocket Man (I Think it’s Going to be a Long, Long Time) – Another awesome classic from Elton. If you are a fan I know you are familiar with this song.
– Tiny Dancer – Yet another great classic sung by Elton John.
– Bennie and the Jets (Live Version)– There is a character name Bennie in the movie. However whenever I hear this song I can’t help but think of the movie called 27 Dresse” staring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden (I’m referring to the bar scene).
The remainder of the album features instrumentals from the film. In a few of the of the songs you can clearly hear influences from classic Elton John songs. Or at least it sounds that way to me.
The last song on the album, The Tiki, Tiki, Tiki Room, is from the movie as well. It’s the song that plays whenever Juliet’s “stage” (for lack of a better description) is turned on. It’s a fun song.
This is a great album that both adults and children can enjoy together. I am sure that there will be many new fans of Elton John after the movie is released on Febaruary 11, 2011. Even the instrumentals can be enjoyed by young and old alike. Personally I like instrumentals sometimes (depending on my mood). These were pretty cool to listen to.
The soundtrack to Gnomeo & Juliet will be available at most retail locations on Febaruary 8, 2011 (TODAY!). The movie will be in theaters near you on February 11, 2011.
