Mother’s Day is right around the corner. Some people are still scrambling for a gift idea for mom. If your mom, grandmother or special lady in your life happens to like movies and entertainment I have a fun gift idea – gift her a special Mother’s Day copy of the movie The Guilt Trip staring Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen.
You could easily pick up a copy of The Guilt Trip, wrap it and present it to mom with a card, however the filmmakers have taken care of that for you with their special Mother’s Day copy. The movie comes with a 3D pop-up card, a special message from Barbra Streisand (auto recording) and the film it’s self is wrapped in a pretty green wrapping paper.
The gift wrapped copy will be sold exclusively at Target.
I was going to record what the card says when you press the button but I didn’t want to spoil the surprise. You’ll just have to pick up a copy for yourself to hear Barbra’s special Mother’s Day message. 🙂
I like that the gift is already to give. All you need to do is take off the outside sleeve and sign the car and you are all ready to give the movie to your mom or other special lady in your life.
I had received a free screener copy of the film to watch with my mom. Sadly my mom passed away over 10 years ago. However I do have a stepmother and I was happy to give the movie to her.
The Guilt Trip is not the type of movie she would normally watch, but she was more than happy to watch it. Actually my father, husband and kids watched the film too. We went to visit my father and stepmother yesterday and I brought the movie with me since I won’t see her on Mother’s Day (they will be in the UK during that time).
She loved the 3D card (it’s pretty realistic looking) and thought what Barbra said in the audio recording was funny. She also enjoyed the packaging.
The Guilt Trip is the story of young man name Andrew Brewster. He’s a scientist who created a Earth friendly organic cleaning product. He tries to get big brands to pick up his product but has not had any luck. He decides the best thing he can do is take a trip across country to see if he can sell his product to a major brand or company.
Before heading out on his trip Andrew stops in New York to visit his mother, Joyce (Streisand). Joyce is a widow who tends to keep to herself except for a few close friends. Because she doesn’t have many people in her life, or much she is doing with her life, she tends to call Andrew several times per day. This annoys Andrew so much that he just deletes her constant messages.
While visiting with his mom Andrew learns that his father was not her first love. A man by the name of Andrew (who he discovers he was named after) was her first true love. She always wondered what happened to him. Andrew did a little investigating and found out that his mother’s first love was alive and living in San Francisco.
In hopes of bringing someone else into his mom’s life (and therefore getting her off his back) Andrew asks his mother if she’d like to go on a road trip with him across country to try and get his product picked up by major brands. Little does she know that Andrew has other plans for her.
What follows is a funny trip across country that doesn’t exactly go smoothly and with an end result that no one saw happening.
What happens on the road trip? How does an overly mothering mom and her adult son handle being cooped up in a small car for hours on end? Will the trip bring mother and son closer together, or tear them apart? To find out the answers you need to pick up a copy of The Guilt Trip which will be available where ever movies are sold on April 30, 2013. If you plan on giving this as a Mother’s Day gift look for the special Mother’s Day packaging. The special packaging copies will be sold at Target.
There are bonus features. Normally I include a mini-review of the bonus features but we never had the opportunity to watch them while we were there. I don’t have a copy of the film (my stepmother kept it). Here are the bonus features in case you are interested.

In addition to giving this as a Mother’s Day gift I think it would be great to make a day out of it. Maybe take mom (or that special lady in your life) out to lunch, and maybe take her to get her nails done and some spa time, squeeze in a little shopping and dinner than enjoy the movie together. Don’t forget to bring mom some other goodies like a box of chocolates she can enjoy while watching the movie (the card comes with a lovely bouquet of flowers).
I thought the movie was sweet. It did have a few moments where Set Rogen’s character came across as a great big jerk, but otherwise it was funny. Barbra’s character was great. She did an excellent job portraying Andrew’s mother. I don’t think he film makers could have picked a more ideal actress to play the role of the mother. Barbra was an excellent choice.
My mother in law liked the movie. She’s a fan of Barbra Streisand. She actually had no clue who Seth Rogen was (they don’t go to the movie’s much nor do they have premium movie channels on their TV). She laughed in spots that reminded her of her own relationship with her late mother who also died about 10 years ago too.
My father and husband also watched the film. My husband commented on how some of the situations reminded him of his mom and how he wished she would have found someone in her life after his father passed away (she was a window for 20+ years. Never remarried or even dated).
I think everyone can see a little bit of their own relationship with their mom in the film. Some good. Some bad. Some funny and crazy.
My kids really didn’t pay much mind to the movie. They were too busy texting their friends.
In addition to the movie I also gave my step mother some other early Mother’s Day gifts including a gift basket filled with great bath products, nail polish (one of which she gave to my daughter because it wasn’t a color she would use), and a couple of other small goodies from my children.
Here is a trailer from the film (disregard the part about December – the movie comes out tomorrow on Blu-ray/DVD). You can also view it here, .
