Having a small amount of storage space might seem like a huge drawback on the surface: the space fills up quickly and you can’t put bulkier items away, so they end up having to go elsewhere in the house. However, it’s possible to make the most of the smallest storage space using a few very simple and easy techniques. Read on to discover ways you can maximise your small storage space.
Start stacking
Your parents told you all that time you spent playing Tetris wouldn’t do you any good, but they were wrong. Tessellation, the act of making items fit together, is essential when dealing with a small storage space. The best method for stacking your stored items is to invest in sturdy boxes from a reputable storage and packing supply company like Fort Knox. Boxes are easy to stack, and they’ll allow you to better condense the items you wish to store.
Install shelving
Shelving is a must when it comes to maximising a small storage space. Shelves are cheap, durable and easy to install. They can be easily uninstalled if you ever have to move, and will be nothing but useful to you for as long as you have them. Whatever you have that can’t be stacked can be stored quickly and effectively on shelves, ready for whenever you might need them. Depending on the type of shelves you install, they’ll be rated for different weights—so don’t go throwing your dumbbells on them if you don’t know whether they can take the weight.
Declutter
A small storage space means a certain amount thriftiness when it comes to your belongings. If an item is too big for your storage area, then consider donating or selling it (if it is still in good working order). If you can’t bear to part with any items that are cluttering up your home, then consider hiring a storage unit you could keep them in. That way you’ll know they’ll be safe and sound while you free up space in your home. Check out this website for the sizes and locations of storage units near you.
Vacuum-sealable bags
Vacuum-sealable bags are absolutely invaluable to anyone with a limited amount of storage space. These bags are perfect for any extra sheets, blankets, doonas, towels or even clothes that don’t get used very often. Doonas in particular take up a lot of room on their own, and a vacuum-sealable bag will allow you to easily compact them down to a much more manageable size for storage. Sealing clothes in bags like these is a great option, too, because this will free up extra space in your wardrobe for storing other items.
These tips are just a handful of suggestions for how you can maximise a small storage space, putting it to work for you without going to a huge amount of effort. What are your top tips for making the most of a tiny storage area? Let us know in the comments below.

I struggle with this, right now our clothes are spread out in the 2 spare closets, and the spare bathroom, all our drawers are full and our two small bedroom closets are full. We clear out stuff and sell them all the time, I don’t know how we have so much.
