When I was a young girl I liked to collect coins from around the world. My father was a world traveler and he would give me all the left over change he had when he returned (instead of exchanging it for U.S. money). I loved to see how different money was from other countries. I had coins from all over the globe, including China (mom brought it back for me from her trip there).
My kids never really got into coin collecting. Each one does have a coin collection their great-grandmother gifted them when they were born. Each set has a set of coins (pennies, nickels, dimes and so forth) minted from the year they were born. I know they are not worth much, but it’s nice to look at money in such pristine condition.
We have a piggy bank that we keep our spare change in. It’s not much to look at. It’s just a jar that sits on a shelf in the kitchen.
Imagine if you could take your spare change and turn it into coin art. You can with a new line of products from New York City-based NSI International Inc. They created an innovative way to turn coins into 3D artwork.
Not only is it artwork but it’s also a lot like a model AND it’s a fun way to save money instead of tossing it into a jar or piggy bank.
There are two versions currently available – an American Flag and the Empire State Building. I was sent the Empire State Building to review.
Check out this brief video that gives you a better understanding of this cool way to save money.
I think it’s awesome. I also like that you can use different coins so you don’t have to collect hundreds of just one type of coin (meaning you can use nickels, dimes, quarters and pennies). That means you an empty out your boring old piggy bank and create a cool looking piece of 3D art with that change instead.
I gave the 3D Empire State Building I was sent to review to my son. He LOVES New York City and anything that has to do with it. He’s also great about saving his money (I wish my daughter was the same way – money is like water in her hands. Ha Ha). He has yet to start it only because he has so few coins. He wants me to take some of his paper money to the bank and exchange it for coins. I told him he’s welcome to our family piggy bank too.
The kit comes with both pieces of the shape (building or flag), a base and a special coin holder/sorter to make things easier for you.
This is a fun project the whole family can work on together. It’s a great way to engage little ones and teaching them how to sort and count.
I believe the Empire State Building takes over 350+ coins, so as you can see, it’s something that you can enjoy working on for weeks to come.
This would make a great gift for a coin collector, a person who enjoys models, or anyone who likes unique gift ideas. With the holiday season fast approaching this would make a great gift for just about anyone – young or old.
When my son FINALLY finishes is I’ll revisit this post and update it with a photo of the finished product.

I haven’t seen the 3D coin art puzzle banks before, but those are pretty cool. I can see it definitely being a unique gift idea for a coin collector type or just fun for the family doing something cool with loose change. Thanks for sharing!
