Available today on DVD today is the horror/comedy film Monsterland.
I am a fan of the horror genre. Aside for a lot of blood and gore, this film is more of a comedy than a horror film.
Monsterland is a series of short horror stories.
The film stars off with a man who hides inside a movie theater while an apocalypse is happening outside it’s doors. One would assume he goes inside the theater to take a break and get some rest.
While in the theater the man is privileged to a movie marathon of horror films. We, the viewer, see the same films he is seeing in the theater.
The films that follow include people being eaten alive by something in a lake when they go for a “skinny dip” at night, a man who has breasts and breast feeds his daughter (there is gruesome reason why), and crabs (or jellyfish – I’m not really sure) that come out of the ocean to eat everyone they see. These are just a few of the mini-movies. There are several. I neglected to count exactly how many there are in this film.
There is even a talking parasite who reminded me of a deranged version of the Alice in Wonderland caterpillar. LOL!
Keep in mind there is the man story of the man taking a break in the movie theater too. Don’t forget about his fate.
I am a die hard horror movie fan and I did not find this film scary at all. It was more gross than anything else. If you don’t like blood, gore and missing body parts, don’t watch this film.
It did have potential. I think some of the mini-movies could have made an interesting full length feature.
There is a lot of sex and nudity in this film. Honestly, I don’t know why horror films have to go that route. Sex and nudity do not make a movie scary. Just stick with things that jump out at you or really scary looking monsters.
Some of the mini movies were just very “trippy.” They didn’t even make sense. Dare I say they were kind of stupid and a waste of time. It’s as though the film makers needed a few extra mini-films to add some time to the overall film.
Personally I was not overly impressed with the film. There were several laughable moments, but as far a scary goes, this was not. I don’t think it was meant to be scary – I think it was meant to be silly and funny.
Even though I didn’t really like this film, that doesn’t mean that you won’t. A review is just a matter of opinion and nothing more. Some might find this film totally entertaining.
Look for Monsterland where ever movies are sold.
Check out the film’s trailer. You can see the talking parasite and jellyfish I mentioned earlier in this post.

I didn’t like the movie at all! I thought it was like a long episode of the show “Monsters” and all the stories were familiar territory. The parasite story was a copy of a film called “Brain Damage” which actually one of my favorite B films……A few good scenes here and there but as you said it is all a matter of opinion.
