I have mentioned on my site before that I love documentaries. Call me a Geek or a Nerd. I don’t mind. I just really enjoy watching documentaries because often I find them eye opening and they expose me to places and people I might not otherwise get to see in my life time. I especially love nature documentaries. Features such as Oceans, Planet Earth, Earth and similar movies/series always leave me wanting more. After I watch documentaries that show me different places around the globe I just want to hop on a plane and fly some place like Africa, New Zealand or even the South Pole.
I recently watched a documentary called The Greatest Places. Originally the film was shown in IMAX theaters in the last 90’s. I don’t even know if we had an IMAX theater around here back then.
IMAX theaters are known for shown movies that draw you in so that you feel like you are actually there, where ever the movie is filmed. For a little “country bumpkin” like me its an amazing way to see the world from a whole perspective.
The Greatest Placesgives you a glimpse into some of the world’s most breath taking locations including the Namib Desert (Angola), Tibet, Madagascar, the Amazon River, Iguazu Falls (Brazil), Greenland and the Okavango Delta in Botswana.
I really wish that I had the chance to see this in the theater rather then on my TV. I bet this film was amazing on the giant IMAX screen.
I watched this Blu-ray twice already. I lose myself in the imagery. It kinds of reminds me of a beautiful screen saver splashed across your TV screen. It’s hard to believe such places exist. Like the Iguazu Falls. I have never heard of it before, let alone seen it. WOW! WOW! WOW! What a powerful looking water fall. I’d be terrified to be on a boat anywhere near that thing.
The quality of the movie is fantastic when you consider it was made over a decade ago. It’s not exactly Earth or Planet Earth, but it’s still a great film.
The film is narrated so that you learn more about the places and creatures that you are looking at.
If you are an animal lover like me you will appreciate the amazing animals (some really cute!) featured in the film. Of course they have to show Lemurs. You can’t show Madagascar without featuring Lemurs. LOL! Madagascar also has some really bizarre looking trees.
The only down side to this movie is that it’s only 40 minutes long, which translates into spending only a few short minutes at each location. I wish the film was a bit longer, even if it was doubled to 80 minutes. The opening sequence was a bit weird too. You can tell the movie was made a long time ago because the special effects were sort of lame.
Overall I’m giving this a two thumbs up. It’s a great movie to add to your Blu-ray collection if you are a fan of nature inspired documentaries.
The Greatest Places is available on Blu-ray where ever Blu-ray movies are sold. I saw the movie on Amazon, available on Blu-ray, DVD and even VHS!
