If you are a pet owner you no doubt care about what you feed your dog or cat.
Believe it or not, not all pet food are made the same. Some people might think that, but it couldn’t be any further from the truth. There are superior pet foods and there are foods that no creature on Earth should be eating (because they are made out of junk).
If I could I would make homemade pet food for all our pets (except our fish, of course). The only problem with that is having the time to prepare and cook it all. With my job and other obligations I have a hard enough time making sure dinner is on the table on time. Not only that, our cats are rather impatient and want to eat “NOW”. They don’t understand the concept of waiting.
One of our former neighbors prepared freshly made food for her dog. I admire that. I wish I could do that too.
You also need to know what you can, and cannot, feed your pets. Some ingredients, like onions, are poisonous for dogs and cats. I believe garlic is too.
With Thanksgiving upon us it’s easy to be tempted to feed your pet scraps from the dinner table. Some foods are OK for your pet, like turkey, carrots, peas, sweet potatoes and apples. Other ingredients might be harmful (NEVER give your dog a poultry bone. They splinter too easily and can get caught in their throat).
You don’t have to feel guilty about not feeding your pet delicious, better-for-them foods. Petcurean’s new NOW FRESH stew and pâté recipes for dogs and cats which are made with 100% fresh ingredients and fall flavors including: turkey, turkey bone broth, fresh potatoes, carrots, peas, cranberries, sweet potatoes, and apples. It’s like a Thanksgiving meal for your pet!
Known for its high quality premium pet food and commitment to sustainability, Petcurean, is expanding its popular NOW FRESHTM line with stew and pâté recipes for dogs and cats, made with 100 percent fresh wild salmon, turkey, or pork in nutrient-rich turkey bone broth. With zero genetically engineered ingredients, and available in industry-leading recyclable and reclosable Tetra Pak® cartons, NOW FRESH stews and pâtés bring innovative fresh and healthy food options that pet parents can feel good about buying and serving.
“Our NOW FRESH stew and pâté recipes have a number of characteristics that make them a unique category leader in the wet food market, including fresh, human-grade ingredients, and innovative eco-friendly packaging,” said Walter Cosman, general manager at Petcurean. “We have long been testing recipes to add fresh, healthy and delicious wet food offerings to our NOW FRESH line-up, and are excited to now offer them for pets across the U.S.”
I received a few samples of NOW FRESH to try out with our furry family members.
I was very surprised to see that NOW FRESH doesn’t come in a traditional can, or even a bag. Instead it is available in little cardboard-like boxes (similar to a juice box). I find that an interesting packaging choice.
The new packaging is easy to work with, but I do have a little bit of trouble tearing it open. That is easily remedied with a pair of household scissors.
So why the interesting new type of packaging?
Petcurean is one of the first pet food companies to choose Tetra Pak® cartons as an innovative and sustainable packaging option. NOW FRESH is packaged in Tetra Pak® cartons that are manufactured from Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC™)-certified paperboard and other controlled sources. Made from 69 percent renewable materials, they are 100 percent recyclable, and BPA-free. The packaging uses less raw material and is more compact to ship than cans, lessening the impact on the environment.
With an easy-to-open tear-off strip and no sharp edges, Tetra Pak® cartons are safe to handle and are reclosable. NOW FRESH stew & pâté recipes are cooked at the lowest temperature for the shortest time possible and are cooked directly in the Tetra Pak® cartons to help prevent cross contamination. This cooking process helps to ensure:
- Improved ingredient digestibility and nutrient availability
- Improved protein functionality and palatability
- Naturally occurring pathogens are destroyed
- The food is shelf-stable
I like that they are “shelf stable” because with winter coming (here in the Northeast) there are times when we are snowed in and the last thing you want is to run out of pet food. For that reason we always stock up on pet food to help us get through the winter months.
I also like that cartons are recyclable. We always recycle. I might even be able to figure out a way of making some kind of craft out of them. I have seen plenty of crafts made from juice boxes. I’m sure I could adapt one (or more) of those crafts with the new Petcurean NOW FRESH containers.
Of our five cats, four of them enjoyed the NOW FRESH I was sent to review (we have one cat who is VERY picky).
The texture is interesting. It’s “mushy”, kind of like the consitency of apple sauce (not as watery). At first I was a bit surprised by it, and I wondered if our cats would like it, but they really enjoy it. The consistency is especially good for our almost 18 year old cat who lost all his teeth and finds it difficult to eat other foods (we have to mash it up for him).
NOW FRESH is more than just food to fill their tummies. The new pet food also delivers ingredients you pet needs to be healthy like Omega 3 & 6 and dietary fiber.
