I’m a huge fan of horror movies. I’m not really into the gory-blood-fest type of horror movies. I’m more so into movies that make you winch or jump out of your seat. For the record I have yet to come across a horror movie that truly scared me. When I was a young girl there was a scene in Salem’s Lot that gave me the heebie jeebies, and the idea of camping out sort of creeps me out (Hello Jason?). For the most part I find horror movies entertaining more so than scary.
On April 2, 2013 the film Stitches makes it’s way to Blu-ray and DVD. It combines horror, gore, comedy and something that many people have nightmares about – CLOWNS. Or in this case on particular clown name Stitches.
Stitches is a rude, crude and overall horrible clown. He looks more like a homeless drunk than he does a circus clown. His costume looks like it came out of a dumpster. Even his clowning skills are sub par.
Stitches is hired to entertain a group of bratty children at a birthday party. Bratty might even be putting it nicely. They are equally as rude and obnoxious, even going so far as to curse at Stitches and give him the finger.
When they kids decide to play a joke on Stitches, except the prank goes painfully wrong when Stitches is accidentally stabbed and dies right on the kitchen floor.
Fast forward six years later. The children are all teenagers now. Most of them haven’t given Stitches the clown another thought, all except the birthday boy, Tom. Tom suffers from anxiety over what happens and often has “day-mares” about Stitches and/or clowns in general.
After many years of suffering with what happen Tom finally allows his friends to throw him another birthday party at his house. Everyone is invited including the original children who were at the party the day Stitches was killed. However there is one uninvited guest that shows up that no one expected – Stitches the Clown! He has returned from the dead to seek revenge on the children (now teenagers) who killed him.
What ensues is a gore-fest-o-rama of severed body parts, heads flying through the air, eyeballs being popped out and brains scooped out from someone’s head.
If you love gore (and I’m talking intestines, heads exploding, gallons of blood…) and slasher films, you’ll love Stitches.
The unusual thing about this film is that it actually has some comedic parts. Some people might find it a lot funnier than others. I actually chuckled a few times, especially the chase scene involving a tricycle.
I’m assuming the film was shot in Ireland because all the actors have a heavy Irish brogue. There were a few times my husband asked me what someone said because he couldn’t make it out. My family hails from Wales so I am used to accents and brogues. There were a few times that even I couldn’t quite make out what someone said.
Stitches is rated R. There are a couple of sex scenes and brief nudity, not to mention bad language, teenage partying (drugs & alcohol) and gore galore. This is certainly not a “family friendly” film. My almost 16 year old wanted to watch it but the film opens with Stitches having sex (no nudity), so I had to leave the room and told her she would have to wait to watch it until after I saw it just to be on the safe side. I’m still on the fence about letting her watch the film. I might only because I know her and she’ll close her eyes during the sex scenes (she finds them embarrassing).
If clowns totally creep you out than Stitches will certainly give you nightmares. 🙂
I honestly didn’t know if I would like the film but I did find it entertaining. I could have done with a bit less gore, but, I understand that gore is what sells a movie sometimes.
There are some bonus features in the film including the trailer (below), bloopers (I didn’t find any of them funny to be honest with you) and the making of the film which gives you a behind the scenes look at the movie, actors and their characters, and how the movie came to be.
Look for Stitches where ever movies are sold April 2, 2013.

Ok this movie just looks scary from the picture. From your review it sounds like a movie my son and his friends would like. It is not on my to see list. 🙂

I adore horror movies and scary movies. Stitches reminds me the clown from it by Stephen King.
